If you willfully sin, are you still sinless?

If a Christian willfully sins then s/he is not really a Christian. "We are dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus". We are guided by the Holy Spirit not by sin. Paul wrote, "For when we were in the flesh, the sinful desires, aroused by the law, were active in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the law, because we have died to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit and not under the old written code."

Do you really not understand this?

Can you tell me which part of Jesus' sacrifice was ineffective? His sacrifice was made once for all. There are no works that need to be performed, no begging for forgiveness, no repentance, etc. That is the flesh performing under the Old Covenant and a denial of Jesus' finished work. You can't be in the flesh and in Christ at the same time. If you are in Christ your sins are forgiven and you are without sin in God's eyes.

No, I do understand this, I just wanted to know if you did. And yes, we are on the same page. :amen:

So, since this thread is so focused on sin, has anyone (besides 1stcenturylady) figured out that we're not, as Christians, supposed to be focusing on sin?

Paul wrote, "For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit." and "But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh."

A person really becomes a Christian through baptism. He becomes born of water and the Spirit/born again John 3:4-6 through the baptism that Jesus Christ commanded in Matthew 28:18-20. A person becomes Jesus' disciple through this baptism. Baptism cannot ever be undone. A Christian can become an evil Christian and thereby condemn himself to hell, but his baptism is forever. An unrepentant evil Christian will suffer more in hell than a person in hell who never became a Christian.

2 Peter 2:20-22
For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overpowered, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 It has happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog turns back to his own vomit, and the sow is washed only to wallow in the mire. rsv

1 Timothy 5:8
If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. rsv

Hebrews 10:26-30
For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries. 28 A man who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy at the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the man (Christian) who has spurned the Son of God (by deliberate sin such as adultery or fornication), and (thereby) profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” rsv

Mark 12:38-40
And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places 39 and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. rsv

John 5:13-15
Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. rsv

Nothing is worse than eternity in hell.

Each Christian chooses by his own actions where he will spend eternity.

Romans 6:22
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life. rsv

Matthew 24:12-13
And because wickedness is multiplied, most men’s (Christians') love (obedience to God) will grow cold (cease). 13 But he who endures to the end (of his life in obedience to God's commandments) will be saved (approved to inherit eternal life). rsv

A person does not love God unless he obeys God. John 14:15, John 14:21

Galatians 6:8
For he who sows to his own flesh (sins against God's commandments) will from the flesh reap corruption (eternity in hell); but he who sows to the Spirit (obeys the Holy Spirit's commands) will from the Spirit reap eternal life. rsv

You can't be in the flesh and in Christ at the same time. If you are in Christ your sins are forgiven and you are without sin in God's eyes.

Jesus' finished work is not what you think it is.

A Christian who remains/abides/continues in Christ lives in obedience to Christ's commandments until he dies. Acts 11:23, Colossians 1:21-23

Christ commands that we love our neighbors as ourselves if we desire to inherit eternal life. Matthew 19:16-19

In order to love our neighbors as ourselves, we must do good to/for them. These good things that we must do for/to our neighbors are called good works/deeds. Matthew 25:31-46

God sees us Christians as we truly are. If we have unrepented mortal sins on our souls, He sees us as unrepented sinners worthy of eternal condemnation. 1 John 5:15-17 God desires to forgive us and He is always most ready and willing to forgive us as soon as we repent of our sins because He loves us and desires all of us to be saved and to inherit eternal life. 1 Timothy 2:3-6

A Christian is not in Christ if he is not living in obedience to Christ's commandments.

A Christian is not in Him if he has unrepented mortal sin on his soul. 1 John 5:15-17

A Christian does not believe in Him/in Christ if he does not obey His commandments.

We Christians need to test/examine ourselves daily to see if we are truly in Him.

2 Corinthians 13:5
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are holding to your faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! rsv

What is this faith test?

1 John 2:3-5
And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He who says “I know him” but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 5 but
whoever keeps his word (commandments), in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him:

1 John 3:3
And every one who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

Christ the Son of God saves us so that we can know, love, and serve Him through our love of our neighbors while we are on earth, and if we are faithful to His commands until we die, He will then approve us worthy to inherit eternal life with God in the new heavenly Jerusalem.

The New Testament exhorts the Christians to continue in the faith. Many will not.

To continue in the faith/belief in Jesus Christ means to continue to obey His commandments.

Hebrews 3:18-19
And to whom did he swear that they should never enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. rsv

There is no belief/faith in Jesus Christ without obedience to His commandments.

Disobedience
= unbelief.

Jesus promised eternal life to the people who love Him.

Who loves Jesus Christ? Is it the person who professes/claims that he loves Jesus Christ or is it the person who proves his love for Jesus Christ by obeying His commandments?

James 1:12
Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him. rsv

1 John 2:3-5
And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He who says “I know him” but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him: rsv

John 14:21
He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” rsv

James 1:21-24
Therefore put away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who observes his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. rsv

James 2:24
You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. rsv
