  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Is it just me or are others getting rather weary of youtube subscriptions stretching out their content from 5-10 minutes up to 25-30? Do they make more from the extra commercials or do they just think that they are entertaining? What used to often be instructive vids now have become lifestyle vids. I get trying to make a buck but the idea used to be content, reasonably short and to the point.

One of the people I watch on YouTube for diamond painting was talking about her views and mentioned that for some reason, more people seemed to be watching her longer videos than her shorter ones. (Fortunately she still does shorter ones too.) I tend to watch shorter videos and skip over the longer videos. I also tend to skip "lives" and videos where there is more chit-chat than actual on-topic talk. I have a few pet peeves when it comes to videos (eating and drinking being a couple of them) and skip over those videos too even if I'd otherwise watch them. There is so much on YouTube that there is no purpose to watching videos just to watch them, and any "conditions" that we come up with to pare down to the basics is beneficial. I've also unsubscribed from many channels that had little substance or were just trying to promote their Etsy or whatever shops.

I use the ad blocker so I don't get a lot of advertising unless the ad is embedded within the video.

Likewise but the vids are getting longer with nothing extra to be said and a lot more b roll. Like I said, I assume they make more with the extra commercials thrown in.

What sort of stuff are you watching where you see this trend?

In some cases, it's not the fault of the person making the video. YouTube started forcing ads into videos even if the video creator chose not to monetize it. In other cases, the video creator didn't realize the amount of ads and if informed, can adjust them down to some degree. For others, it's probably just as timothyu said.

That's where the Shorts comes in. Clearly they're appealing to both and sucking people in. I find myself wasting probably a few minutes on FB in that area, just flipping through vids that are probably 30 seconds each max, usually less

I find myself in the unprecedented position of agreeing with you entirely. I have gone from watching instructional videos to skipping through them to find the 10% that's actually instructional.

Yes I suppose. I do appreciate them quite often but it does often show just how much of the original vid was filler :)
It's not always a bad thing to have longer vids, since otherwise you'd have the same issue of excessive ads over vids structured into pieces. Plus there's the whole pipeline that, according to some studies, may even lead to people being radicalized by fringe ideas, especially in the last few years.

More commercials for them to make money off of?
That and it keeps you on the platform. All the companies are fighting for our attention. Every minute on Youtube is a minute not on Netflix, Amazon, Disney Plus, etc.

I like short videos. But if im learning something important then I can watch easily over an hour video. Or even more.
