  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let's say you were an innocent person in Nazi occupied Germany during Hitler's crusade to kill millions of Jews. You've got several Jews hiding in the attic of your house. One of Hitler's right hand men knocks on your door and asks you if there are any Jews in your house? Do you tell him the truth, after which your Jewish house guests are exterminated in the chambers? Or do you lie so your Jewish house guests can live?

In the post you originally had this, I wasn't saying don't lie, I was simply showing that just by lying, it's not like you're out of the woods yet. They could've chose to search you if they wanted.

{Edit}
But if they say, "oh but if you say no, we'll move on. We trust you."

Then yes, protect their lives.

The best ethical treatment I know of on this issue by a book by Sisela Bok, called "Lying." She looks at a variety of ways lying is actually used. Much of the time, maybe almost all of the time, it is used to avoid confronting issues or taking responsibility for things. We should be much more careful about the truth than we often are. But there are times when there's no choice. She thinks they're roughly the same times that it would be justified to use force: to protect innocent people from significant harm where there is no other reasonable way to protect them.

Sin is anything not in the expressed will of God

Evil is a malicious intent to commit sin.

Not all sin is Evil, but all Evil is sin.

We can sin and it not have a malicious intent. We can sin out of love.
This scenario is extreme, I would say that it would not take Nazis to inspire a lie/sin from a position of Love.

The identification of sin has only one purpose. To point to the need for atonement. The identification of Sin is not intended to be used as you have done so here. (As a stumbling stone for a believer)

You lie so that your Jewish house guests can live. The Great Commandment is that we love our neighbor, if telling the truth means being unloving or implicitly or explicitly bringing harm or destruction to our fellow man then it is contrary to Divine Law.
