For those who live in Alabama, should Alabama have their own lottery? There's the old argument we keep losing money to out of state lotteries in Georgia, Tennessee and Florida plus casinos in Mississippi. Apparently, Nick Saban thinks Alabama should have a lottery since Alabama is at a disadvantage with other states in offering athletic scholarhips.

Personally, I don't care. I don't play the lottery very often. Even when the Georgia lottery Mega Millions or Tennessee's Powerball reaches $200 or $300 million dollars, I don't go rushing to the nearest convience store at the state line to wait 8 hours for a lotto ticket.

To be honest, I'm not sure how the scholarhip from the lottery would help someone with disorders like asperger's syndrome who wanted to go to college.

lottery=gambling=sin

You need to read the fine print of those lotteries that supposely pay for education. There are stipulations and not everyone gets a free education that way.

Hi Y'all

I am an Alabama girl, so I speak from experience.

The people of Alabama have voted and did not want a lottery. It is not the cure all some politicians make it out to be, and it is gambling.

I don't understand the point about Nick Saban and the aspergers syndrome. Is there a joke there I don't get?

Conditions in Alabama are improving. Businesses are moving into all areas of the state, and folks are improving their lives the old fashioned way - They earn it! - not by some freak chance of a lottery, but with better paying jobs.

I'm for the lottery, even though I don't/wouldn't play it. I know plenty of people who go across the border to spend hundreds on lotto tickets. That's, say $100 per person per year? Maybe. Multiply that times just half of Alabama's population...

I totally support it. I'm not sure why it should even be a debate. If you feel that it's a sin & goes against your religion, then don't partake in it. Just because it's available to the public doesn't mean someone's forcing you to buy the tickets.

It is rouse, don't believe it. They fooled me once with the same rhetoric.

I believe that we should have a lottery but I am also a realist who realizes that this sort of thing can't pass statewide. It shouldn't go beyond notice that the Indians have just opened a casino in Atmore. I personally believe that they should let the area of the state that supports legalized gaming and which keeps the casinos in Biloxi in business be allowed to have gambling. To be clear it would only be allowed on the coast. It should be allowed though. If we legalized gambling for the two coastal counties Biloxi would be put out of business in a year because Gulf Shores and Orange Beach with casinos would beat out Biloxi because of the beaches.

I don't want to force North Alabama to do anything they don't want and they shouldn't have gambling because it is against their values. It's not against our values though and our area loses a lot of money every year to gas stations in Pensacola and casinos in Biloxi which I would prefer to stay here

So ethics and values should be set aside so Alabama can take some almighty powerful dollars from Mississippi.

If we follow this logic, abortions should be done on every street corner because - no wait they are legal on every street corner because people for whom abortion did not go against their values prevailed and continues to prevail.

So should we also have marijuana legally sold on street corners? We could say 'look if it's against your values don't buy the stuff'. Just think of all the money the state of Alabama could make! Just think of all the money we could save!

I am not saying that we should have gambling statewide. However, if Mobile was in Mississippi or Louisiana (and culturally it is Louisiana) it would have casinos and Orange Beach would probably be competing with Vegas by now. I understand that most of the state feels that gambling is immoral but we clearly don't. For me this is an issue of local control. What right does Montgomery have to tell me that I can't open a certain business in my area that there is a demand for just because lawmakers in another part of the state oppose it just as lawmakers from my area shouldn't force the dry counties to go wet just because them being dry goes against our local values. And a point of clarification. Because most of Alabama opposes gambling and because they would hate the idea of the coast having it even though we want it, I would oppose any plan where the state gets that money. That money should stay in our community so we can fix it up like Biloxi was before the hurricane
