So I get why SOME need to turn to that. But I will also say that if we introduced it to our kid as an option he would ALWAYS want chocolate milk and would whine about regular milk. Smae with juice.

Let them whine.

My kids only get water, white milk, or almond milk as choices. Chocolate milk is a dessert and they only get it with lunch or dinner. I quit buying juices long ago, they're all full of sugar any way and humans aren't meant to drink sugar all the time.

I grew up drinking water, water and water. Juice was a treat, as was flavored milk, in oth cases we got it in juice boxes while we were out and I remember it mostly has a reward for being good at the doctors/specialists/hospital.
That said we DID drink cordial sometimes in summer, but usually only when my dad made it up (he likes it too!) and we almost never made it to the strength recommended on the bottle. Cordial, for the Americans, is a sugar and fruit syrupy liquid (sometimes artificially flavored) mixed about 1:4 with water for summer drinks. It's basically healthier koolaid (which I've had, having lived in the USA as a child too).

We did eat a lot of homemade cookies and cake though, as dessert or with tea (which normally meant cordial since young children aren't given tea) which in Australian culture (especially country Australian) is a break from work to sit and chat with the family or colleagues, traditionally mid morning (morning tea) and mid afternoon (afternoon tea). It's so ingrained that we even have a break in schools for it in the morning :)

There are a lot more regulations about tap water than bottled.
There may be but I'm happy buying something that tells me directly what's in it.
And sitting around in a plastic bottle for who knows how long is a great way to leach chemicals and have bacteria grow.

Who knows how long? Then you must believe that any product your buy you don't know about how old it is.

In this country we have 'use by dates' as a guide.

There is a strong correlation in the US between tooth decay and lack of flouride.
Yet we don't see that in other developed nations where fluoride is not used - I think you'll find it is to do with general good health.

But, I would say more importantly thatn flouride is working to dispell the myth that little kids need juice or that juice is really that healthy. If we add vitamin C and other nutrients to sodas (which they can do and I am surprised it has happened yet, to fool the masses into thinking that now there is such thing as healthy pop) they would be about as healthy for our children. I'm not saying it's evil for our little kids to have juice in moderation but it's really not any healthier than a so-called fruit-snack.

I didn't realize this until we had kids and my wife learned about this. The amount of sugar in juices compared to the depletion of nutrients that is otherwise in real fruit is amazing. There is honestly not that much that separate Sprite from OJ or Apple Juice. A little... but not enough to justify the amount of juice our kids drink.

I will say this for any parents-to-be. Your kids don't miss it if they've never had it or at the very least if you train them that that is a treat. For our kid, juice is a treat they have a grandma and grandpas house. We never give him chocolate milk either. But, so people dont' think I am a complete judgmental jerk, I totally get that some kids are harder than others to get them to eat stuff and you just have to feed them what they will eat. So far, we;ve been blessed on this front. Chocolate milk for some has been a blessing because their kids would never get their calcium. So I get why SOME need to turn to that. But I will also say that if we introduced it to our kid as an option he would ALWAYS want chocolate milk and would whine about regular milk. Smae with juice.

But seriously, before I had kids, my wife and I were much mroe ideal about how we would raise them. Now we choose the battles we feel are most important that we are best able to fight without going mad. lol So again, I am totally not judging parents who give their kids juice or chocolate milk. In the end, the truth is that some of our most successful peopel have had a diet of chocolate milk, non-organic grapes from chile, lucky charms and hate salads. What mattered more, in my opinion was having parents that loved their kids, taught them to be active and value integrity above all.

As part of the government's moves to make kids healthier we all were given free milk to drink in primary school.

But ya gotta remember, I'm a HUGE Trekkie and sci-fi guy, so I internalize anything as Star Trek! ^_^

Ah, but it's nothing to do with the actor.

It's from reading about the "Peers" (or "Paladins") of Charlemagne. One of his nephews was Rinaldo. Rinaldo's castle was Montalban. You can read about him as "Renaud de Montauban" here

There is some contraversy regarding the fluoride. I know about Britta I used to have that pitcher too...and thinking if that buying a better filtration system for the sink would be a better idea...Although our new fridge has also its own filter...
In the end you do not know what to believe and who...
For sure giving up the bottled water is not a bad idea. Why pay for water in such a high price while it is not that healthy to start up with.
Anyhow back to the topic lol....

There isn't really any controversy about fluoride. Scientifically, fluoride is just fine, but of course like all the other anti-medicine movements there will be conspiracy theories on the internet. But yeah, anyways.

Controversy surrounding fluoride is more from arm chair scientist than actual professionals in the field of science and medicine, kind of like all the celebrities against vaccines. With that said Philothei is absolutely correct to toss the bottled water and go for tap water. There is now an increase in tooth decay in young children that have never had sweets, soda, or juice. The only answer they are coming up with is these small children drink bottled water and testing is showing it doesn't have the amount of fluoride in it as our tap water is treated with here in the USA.

If one needs to carry water around with them, invest in a half liter or liter bottle and fill it from your tap. Almost everyone on this thread is old enough to remember we didn't drink bottled water as children. Our parents would have thought it was insanity to purchase cases of bottled water and yet today everyone thinks they cannot survive if they drink anything but bottled water. I never even saw cases of bottled water sold at my local grocery store until 10 years ago. It has to be the best advertising campaign ever to convince whole nations to in little as 10 years to doubt the safety of their tap water and blow fortunes on bottled water.

I'm a huge trekker myself. I have the original 3 series digitally re-mastered and all the original films.

My least favourite episodes are "Spock's Brain" and "The Way to Eden" from the original series, and "Shades of Grey" from the Next Gen. Pretty much every episode in DS:9 with "Vic Fontaine"

No doubt, brother. The Way to Eden, a total Trek low-point. We have space hippies doing a jam session with Spock, poisoned fruit, "Herbert" as an insult, knocking people out by touching their ears on both sides with your index fingers, an the Irina Gayayulin thing was enough to make me gag.

Spock's Brain was hilarious, too. Weak as heck. "Brain and brain! What is brain!" LOL

IMHO, the very worst episode of Trek was "the Alternative Factor." That plain stunk. "Assignment: Earth" was stinkin' too.

Next Generation had plenty of stink bombs if you ask me.

I've gone to a lot of conventions and have met many of the original crew and TNG crew. I'm proud to have seen and gotten an autograph from Deforest Kelly, Shatner, Frakes, Sirtis, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Majel Barrett, John DeLancie, and a bunch of others. I even got to see Gene Roddenberry about 11 months before he died. I have a lot of pictures with the cast and autographs. Good times.

I agree and if you saw the video about the bottled water the damage the plastic bottles do to the environment is crazy.... Why add to the pile of plastic? I was very shocked to see that only 20% of the "little bottles" ONLY get recycled. I am so mad that they tell us to recycle and they end up "burrying" it anyhow as there are no companies that actually melt these stuff to recycle...me that is a joke for sure. Soooo yeah no more bottles for me now trying to persuade my teen is another battle but I am working on it. I promised to get her a britta jar... She declined to drink from the fridge's water for "it smells funny" although it has its own filter...*sigh*

I have no children (yet)
I have no horse in this race (that I'm willing to admit on a public forum)
I have an article I just think y'all might find interesting, that I just found, and submit without comment. The blog is good too.

I have a great love of the work of the late Charles Napier... but I believe in that episode Spock smirks
Spock's Brain was hilarious, too. Weak as heck. "Brain and brain! What is brain!" LOL
I particularly hated how Spock gave Bones instructions on how to re-connect his brain AS Bones was doing it.

the Alternative Factor is one I forgot to add.
"Assignment: Earth" was stinkin' too.
Assignment: Earther I think was an attempt to start a spin-off series

As I am anti-social I have never been to a convention (I even get my groceries on-line)

Also, learn a little bit about your local water. Places rate the water and I have found municipalities often to be brutally honest about their water safety (I can't swear that such is the norm, though). Because, in a lot of places, the water is just fine for people with normal immunity. I have no problem drinking the water where I live and for me (because I am a disorganized person) remember that special 10 dollar filter bottle will be a hassle and won't happen on a regular basis. If the water here weren't safe for me, I would probably end up being a water bottle person or, worse yet, drink a lot of soft drinks and juice (because it's bottled). An added benefit (I say, added because this is not actually why I do it) is that I'm not wasting any plastic at all (including the filter).

But, if the water is weak or you live with people with weaker immunities (sick, babies, elderly) then the filter seems important.

Although I don't drink alcohol (not since 1986) I was wondering about this - is there any beer that comes in plastic bottles?

gasp-- If there is, that's a who different problem... of moral and soul-destroying proportions.

I have seen in the store near me a couple of Korean beers in plastic bottles, not sure if that is how that beer is sold in South Korea or if it is just for when it is exported to other countries. I heard from a friend that in some Eastern European countries that is the only way you can buy beer.

In the US some sporting veunes and concert halls only sell beer in plastic bottles. I have heard two reasons for that- safety because people were using the glass beer bottles as a weapon (breaking it or throwing it like a missle) and clean up of the broken glass. I think this might be geographical though because I have been to a couple of games in the last year and the beer was poured into a plastic cup, no plastic bottled beer that I saw.

I haven't been through all 12 pages, so if I repeat someone, so sorry. Having learned this when homeschooling my boys a couple years ago, thought I'd share. Did you know that only 3% of the water in the world is drinkable for us humans? Amazing, huh. :sorry:
