Is it too early to start planting in April this year in PA? What do you guys think? It seems most of the posters here are from Penn state ;)

ummm...I also found out a farm (organic) that delivers for 25 dollars a week and the stuff they deliver is pretty good :)

A week in June:

  • 1 qt strawberries
  • 1 bunch brussel sprout tops
  • 1 bunch broccoli
  • 1 head romaine
  • 1 qt shelling peas
  • 1 bunch asparagus
  • 2 patty pan squash
  • 1 bunch radishes
Clarion River Organics: CSA

these are samples of course but I thought it was wonderful...I love the surprise each week and saves me from going to different Farmer's Markets...

I miss our delivery from the farm in Kalamazoo... It is so great to meet the farmers personally :)

I guess it does go against the attempt to buy locally for most of the posters in this thread. LOL Not all though! I'm sure I saw at least one Australian flag...

I recall reading that Kangaroo meat is cholesterol free.

There's two major types of kangaroo; red and, grey. (There's others such as the tree kangroo; wallabies are in effect smaller species of kangaroos).

Because of their unique breeding cycle (where they can always have a joey ready in the pouch) they breed very quickly and a viewed by farmers as pest (as competitors with commercila grazing stock).

Something I haven't seen mentioned here is kangaroo meat. It's a great meat without many of the associated ethical and health concerns of other meats. It's free range, no chemicals, no hormones, lower in fat and higher in iron that other red meats. It's more expensive, but it's yummy and guilt free.

There's emotive guilt - in that kangaroos 'look cute'. Also, because they're our national animal. Would Americans consider eating bald eagle and say "It's like chicken"?

There's disputes about their numbers, but clearly they have increased with the arrival of Europeans - who have, for farming purposes, provided more water and grazing areas.

I've never tried it myself. I once had a meat pie made with emu meat and that was gross.

People seem to enjoy it. Aborigines at kangaroo for ages before Europeans came here.

I don't know which kangaroos *you're* looking at :p I don't think they're cute. We eat kangaroo sometimes, it seems very much like lamb to me.

I think they are farmed these days. They are an excellent option for Australians because unlike sheep and cows they don't have hooves and so they don't damage the land the way our traditional meat does. Less soil erosion is something Australia needs to work on.

It is a 'gourmet' meat, so I don't think I'd compare it to dog.

A friend was telling me about some weird treatment that bananas get that is really bad for the workers--thats why they buy organic bananas. Idk if its true or not, and we do buy regular bananas--they are a great bang for the buck.
Berries are SO expensive in general. Thats why I admit to buying sams club frozen berries, it's about $3.25 a lb and I can get it in the winter. Apples are often cheaper at our farmers markets where I can get a 1/2 bushel for $6 or something.

Our organic baby carrots are actually baby carrots, not cut up, but I bet theyre grown inside hydroponically or something that doesnt really require pesticides. they are close in price to regular ones.

yes, my mom went to a talk by a missionary who worked with banana plantation workers. They spray the fields while the workers are in them.

Another popular book along the same lines is "Square Foot Gardening".

I'd recommend How to Grow More Fruits and Vegetables than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land than You Can Imagine. It talks a lot more than Square Foot Garden about having a really sustainable garden.

I got that book this year and ordered their heirloom seeds that can be harvested for next season. I have some seed to start then transplant, also need to get the beds dug and compost pile started. I like the focus on sustainable and low-tech tools and methods anyone can use. Now, I just have to get to work!!

Kangaroos are farmed and also they're occasionally culled like when they were a pest near Canberra. Either way, they are tasty, but difficult to cook well. When it's cooked well it's delicious when it's not it's like leather.\

And as for AWW BUT THEY'RE CUTE!!!!!

- Americans, you eat Bambi and his mother! ;)

Not totally but I did buy a great plastic up with a screw on lid and straw that works awesomely from water (I don't like reuseable water bottles that you suck on because I don't like that airy water and sound as I drink).

There is everything terrible about disposable water bottles. Remember the days when we didn't feel the need to be attached to a bottle of water at every second of the day? If you're under 20, probably not. I remember when bottled water became a thing and people were like "why? just get a cup and fill it with water. Pay for water?" how the times have changed.

I will watch the video and yeah I am trying hard to do this. We have a refrigerator filter but I heard that the tap water has fluoride and that is bad.... It literally does not help teeth...it seems that it is just a thing that was just added...urgh...You need reverse osmosis to get rid of fluoride That is why I buy the big bottled water for just using a variety of waters...They say that is good for the kidneys for the same minerals build up stones in the kidneys.

I must confess that I drink a lot of bottled water, but I do have a water bottle that I take with me (BPA free) when I remember. The water here is awful - most people have filters on their taps because it tastes so terrible, so it's not just a case of going to the tap and getting a cup, it never has been for me. We have a rainwater tank at home and then filter that before we drink it.

I made amazing soup that made me think of this thread tonight -

rice wine vinegar and caster (superfine) sugar brought to the boil with a vanilla pod, then cooled. This is added to the rest of the soup at the end.

500g roma tomatoes, cut in half and seasoned with salt and pepper, then left to cool
In a saucepan - 4 tablespoons of olive oil, half a large carrot, diced, two small or one large stalk of celery, diced, a garlic clove finely chopped and a teaspoon of paprika, with a rasher of middle bacon diced up and fried for five minutes, then some flour added and cooked through, and then sundried tomatoes, a litre of chicken stock, and the roast tomatoes added. Simmer the lot for 15 minutes, then blend and strain, adding some of the vinegar stuff at the end.

Amazing with bread and butter, my family loved it :D

That's the only water I drink. Also, I don't use toothpaste. I do still clean my teeth but only with the brush, and water.

I have done this for 20 years and have great teeth.

Kick the Bottled Water Habit
SoBW.png

In the movie, we learned that bottled water is not safer, or better tasting, or even more convenient, than tap water; it’s certainly not cheaper, and it generates massive amounts of needless waste. The piping, the bottling, the transportation, the greenhouse gases…it’s all unnecessary. So, on a daily basis, we don’t need bottled water, period.
As individuals, we can each stop buying it and start using reusable bottles. If you plan to purchase a bottle, we recommend stainless steel or lined aluminum. Both Food & Water Watch and Corporate Accountability International offer reusable bottles to their members. We also recommend reusing most any convenient bottle you have at hand.
If you have concerns about the quality of your tap water, or the chemicals it may contain due to treatment or to contaminants, contact your local water utility to ask for a report.
To address your concerns, there are many brands of safe, convenient home water filters you can install in your kitchen.
