Server crash - 31 March 2004

Hi all,

Not sure what happened, but we had a surge of online users just now (over 5,000) causing our server to totally crash.

Thank goodness I was online, and I managed to reboot the server.

My apologies for the downtime. We were off for maybe 15 minutes or so...

Technology does have it's limits.

Hopefully this crash will deter users from using the forums, so it doesn't happen again

I agree. I vaguely remember reading about some kind of spam like that. Oh yea. My hosting company had a major issue with that until they worked on their servers. Something about the computer sends something to the server asking for a connection, the server sends something to the computer for verification, the computer never sends anything back and the server is tied up waiting for a response. When the server gets these bogus requests in massive amounts it shuts down the server.

TCP SYN flood.

I think there are workarounds depending on the OS (I'm assuming it isn't Windows).
