Hi all,

Not sure what happened, but we had a surge of online users just now (over 5,000) causing our server to totally crash.

Thank goodness I was online, and I managed to reboot the server.

My apologies for the downtime. We were off for maybe 15 minutes or so...
When I saw the new record, I wondered if you'd somehow sprung for advertising on the moon or something. ;)

Sounds like the system was "spammed" by a bunch of phoney users!
I agree. I vaguely remember reading about some kind of spam like that. Oh yea. My hosting company had a major issue with that until they worked on their servers. Something about the computer sends something to the server asking for a connection, the server sends something to the computer for verification, the computer never sends anything back and the server is tied up waiting for a response. When the server gets these bogus requests in massive amounts it shuts down the server.

TCP SYN flood.

I think there are workarounds depending on the OS (I'm assuming it isn't Windows).

The server is about to crash again because the online count is up to 3227.
