  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Seriously?!?!?!?

We are all human and susceptible to the temptations common to all people. Rather than condemn, pray and go to the overtaken and help restore them.
I agree 100%.

The thing that bothers me about the - well, admittedly it's the tone of the article, and may be the bias of the writer and not reflect the full scenario ...

(ETA to be fair - I did not read the entire thing - I don't really want to know details.)

What bothers me is that the response seems to be one of complete secrecy - restoration without any accountability or dealing with the problem. (And I don't think such a person should be restored to a priestly ministry - I think such a failing should disqualify one from that particular position because trust is essential.)

Maybe it's not really like that? But it certainly seems a lack of transparency and accountability is an issue both with those supporting the organization and the work they do. And I don't think that leads to healthy restoration - which of course should always be the goal (while protecting anyone from further victimization, for the sake of victims and offender alike).

Certainly though prayer should be our response.

This seems to be systemic in the RCC and should be condemned...

This is terrible, but is it really charitable to post it here when it relates to the RCC?

It would be deleted immediately there.

Lord have mercy, very heartbreaking for the victims .

Prayers for the victims, and for the repentance of the offenders. Im just thankful we aren't in Communion with Rome, thank God.

For someone who was permabanned for one post - one post - asking a question about aspects of Mother Teresa's and Pope John Paul II's life that seem fundamentally syncretic and relativist towards other religions, I can fully attest to this.

We do need to be careful about triumphalism, but these things can be helpful for inspiring us to reflect on the lessons we can learn here - for instance, what structural features are there which contributed to these failures that are present in our own Church? Maher got the ears of influential and powerful people - Neuhaus (of First Things), Avery Cardinal Dulles, for instance - how can we make sure that our influential and powerful figures don't get taken in like this? Frankly, this highlights how the OCA's reaction in the case of Met Jonah's mishandling of a sex abuse case was, ultimately, the right decision and helped safeguard our church from this kind of abuse, if we want to look at an incident in our own past.

This issue has impacted numerous denominations. Many victims have never come forward.

As parents and members we must be wise and prudent. We can’t make assumptions and expose innocents to harm under the belief it will never happen. This is a grievous sin that violates everyone it touches. Both near and far.

We cannot be ambassadors of faith if we’re unwilling to clean our house. We can’t expect the world to trust us if we’re untrustworthy. We cannot affect the lost if we’re infected.

We must be cleansed and purge the sin from our midst. That’s the only way we’ll heal.

As gzt alludes, it is instructive. But for the grace of God, there would we go. Does a marrying priesthood help prevent this? Probably. In Ancient Rome at least, young boys were taken on military campaigns as substitute women. They were small and relatively hairless--traits that resembled women's. So there are people who would be satisfied with a woman as an economic substitute. But I tell you, there are other features of the young--boys and girls--that some people get off to. Some people, for instance, get off to the naiveté, to the fantasy of "teaching." Our system doesn't have as many obvious safeguards against that.

They should all be made eunuchs. Not with "chemical" methods that are usually reversible. I mean your state's governor goes Warden of the North and personally chops their nads off without anaesthetic in the name of Donald of the House Trump, First of His Name, King of the Kekistanis and the First Toxic Men, Lord of the Fifty Kingdoms and Puerto Rico, and Protector of the Realm.

Self-mutilation is a violation of canons.
