• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Faith only works if there is one proposed deity to believe in.
That statement makes no sense to me.

Yet, Jews propose their god. Hindus propose their god. Muslims propose their god. Christians propose their god. Pagans propose their gods. Atheists propose that there doesn't seem to be a god.
You have missed something along the way. The Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship the same God.

That statement makes no sense to me.
Person A comes to you and says his god is real.
Person B comes to you and says her god is different from Person A's god, and that only her god is real.
Person C comes to you and says that he actually understands Person B's god better than she does, so his description of that god is more accurate.
Person D comes to you and says that the other three were all wrong, and that only her god is real.
Person E comes to you and says that he believes in a whole bunch of gods, including Person B and Person C's gods, but not person A or person D's gods.
Person F comes to you and says that some of the others are partially correct, but they only have a limited understanding. He knows god's characteristics better than they do.

Which one do you put faith in?

You have missed something along the way. The Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship the same God.
Christians believe Jesus is God. Jews don't believe Jesus is God. Muslims believe that the Qu'ran is a literal word-for-word recitation from God. Christians don't believe that.

The religions sprang from the same general area over various time periods, and built off of the previous religions. I see some Christians here who consider the Islamic god to be their god as well, while I see other Christians who claim that the Islamic god is certainly not their god. I don't personally care, to be honest with you, as it doesn't affect the point I was making.

Given a list of competing and sometimes exclusive claims about which god(s) exist, a sorting mechanism is required. If "faith" is used, what do you base this faith on?

That which God has made clear to me is that which I believe in. I don't have the words or the time to explain the triune God. Suffice it to say that God is God. Jesus is God as is Holy Spirit. Just as I am a daughter, an aunt and an employee; I am always Mobi. Jesus is a facet of the one God. That God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael. Since all our belief systems descend from Abraham and Sarah we all believe in the same God who visited them.

As a side, one also has faith that the (previously untested) chair they are about to relax in will not collapse beneath them.
What piffle.

You might have faith that your chair will not collapse when you sit on it. Personally, I happen to know from experience that based on its design and my weight my chair is not likely to collapse when I sit on it.

Ptft. Not all Christians believe in the same god, let alone Christians, Muslims, and Jews.

I know Christians who say God will allow those in who truly seek God in their hearts, even if they don't profess it, while others say God lets in, and only lets in those who profess him as the savior.

I know Christians who think their God accepts homosexuals, and I know Christians who think their God hates homosexuals.

These are different God, likely ones who would not be able to stand each other.

Why, of course they do. People's assumptions about what what God thinks are about as accurate as people's assumptions about library paste. Useless and irrelevant. The fact remains that since lineage of Abraham is the source of Judaism and Christianity and Muslims worship the God of Abraham (check the Koran) they do.

What a curious OP.

Keeping in mind that the majority of the sub-forums on CF have a double in the Christian-Only sections, I consider it odd that anyone would complain atheists specifically wanting to argue with Christians as the latter group is free to discuss the exact same topic without interference.

The Gods might come from the same origins, but other than that, they differ in all fundamental ways. The true essence of a God is not which profit claimed to speak with him, but rather what his ethical and moral views are, what actions he chooses to take, and how he interacts with other sentient beings.

On anything that matters, Christians have hundreds of different Gods.
