So, I am coming back, from backsliding once again, and having the same issue that has caused me to flee from God every other time. I have an immense amount of self loathing over many of the things which I did over the course of my life. How can I deal with this once and for all? Any advice out there?

Do you think that Christ didn't know all about all of your sin when He hung on that tree? By all means hate even the garment spotted by the flesh. Recognize that in your flesh you are nothing but sin and hate your sin the way God does.

At the same time also recognize that God sees no sin in His people. He looks on us as we really are and we are really in Christ. If God can see no sin in us, though we are full of it, then we need to live and learn to see ourselves as God sees us.

Fight that daily war with your flesh and walk in this world looking to Christ alone. He iss all my righteousness, all my holiness and all my hope of acceptance with God. His is all and enough. If we can ever find out that Christ is all that God requires of us we may be able to look to Him.

I know from experience that looking at your self can only cause your guilt and confision. Looking at yourself all that can be seen is sin. Looking at yourself will lay a load of guilt on your back that will bend you over under its weight. The only way to rid yourself of the load is to look up to Christ. You will never be able to meqsure up to the standard. Hate the natural man that is you and battle him daily. But don't live as though you are defeated for Christ has already won the victory. He lived a perfect life in my place and His life is all that I need to be guiltless before God.

The question that you need to answer for yourself is whether you are truly looking to Christ. Is He enough for you or do you need more than Him?

First, there is no once and for all. A lot of people (me included) struggle with the idea that there is something God is going to do or some method we can find to fix us to the point where we can stand on our own two feet. Most of us want to go off and find the spiritual repair kit somewhere, get ourselves all cleaned up, and then present ourselves to God, all nice and shiny. It doesn't work that way. Our weakness is always there, and it can either drive us away from God or it can drive us to Him.

Even after we become Christians, most of us insist on making our relationship with God depend on us. If this is you, stop making this about you, and make it all about Jesus. God isn't measuring you by your performance anymore. Your Redeemer is Christ. His work is sufficient, and your experience of the gospel's freedom is all wrapped up in whether or not you believe that to be true. He is the Redeemer of every moment of your life, not just the Last Day. The more we hold that truth close to our hearts, the more the power of the gospel will engage and free us from climbing the futile road of trying to redeem ourselves.

The irony of the gospel is that we experience heart felt obedience when we overcome the desire to redeem ourselves through obedience. We love others when we stop measuring ourselves by our love of others. Grace is not something God gives to those who have earned it. It isn't reserved for the disciplined, or the righteous, or those that have pulled themselves together. Grace lives in those who accept that they need it to do even the simplest of things.

As you realize the forgiveness you have in Christ and the love of God that His work on your behalf represents, a weird thing happens. You start to trust in the righteousness of Christ more than you trust in yourself. As you accept that you are no longer condemned and beat down by your encounters with your own weakness, you start to rely on God's strength more and more.

In other words, you don't take care of this once and for all by finding a way to "beat it". You take care of this every day by trading your weakness for His strength. "Look, God, I'm as weak today as I was yesterday apart from you. I'm not hiding from this. I thank You for it, because as I remember my own weakness I am drawn again to the beauty of Christ and the mercy You've shown me by laying His righteousness to my account. Live in me today, and help me to see the evidence of your grace."

I hope this helps, but I'm sorry that it isn't a to do list of attaining personal righteousness. There is no such thing.

How can I deal with this once and for all?

Basically, you can't. What a relief! But Jesus can, if you allow Him. I know that doesn't eliminate awakened desires, bad habits, past memories, emotional associations. And if the issue is sexual your sexuality won't go on ice. But we can never really succeed if it is just a matter of renewed determination, will power, religious exercises such as prayer, or bible reading, important as the last two are.

You will begin to make progress when you stop seeing Jesus and/or God being mad at you for yet another failure. In reality Jesus wants to come alongside and walk through a change process with you, to be your teacher and guide. Just start chatting with Him. Tell Him all about where you are at and know he understands. Then trust that He will be there for you, maybe not as you expect, but listen, keep your heart open, and don't get buried under the tensions and barriers that condemnation always brings.

Hosea 14:4
I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.

Luke 15:20 & 24
But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
24. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

Isaiah 43:4-8
Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you, and people in exchange for your life. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' and to the south, 'Do not hold them back.' Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth- everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." Lead out those who have eyes but are blind, who have ears but are deaf.

Father God, comfort your son. Help him to rest and have peace that You love him when he obeys, and You love him when he rebels. Show him the things he cannot see and help him understand Your ways so that he will be able to withstand temptations because he knows Your joy and salvation like he has never known it before. In Jesus' name I pray. AMEN.

Sorry to hear about your struggle bro. I hope and pray you can move past your self loathing. Self loathing can be crippling (as you probably well know).

Although I am not Eastern Orthodox, I always liked their icon called 'the Ladder of Divine Accent". You can look it up on Google. But it really shows how the walk of the faithful can progress. We continue to climb up each rung of the ladder while little 'demons' and 'distractions' try to pull us off. Then we have to start all over and climb again. Don't let those 'demons' get to you. Hold fast to that ladder and continue to climb. The Holy Spirit will help you keep your grip! The enemy wants you to remember your pain and loathing so you lose your grip and fall down the rungs again. Don't let it happen. God wants you to stay on the ladder and climb. I will pray for you.

I have an immense amount of self loathing over many of the things which I did over the course of my life. How can I deal with this once and for all? Any advice out there?

Stop trying to save yourself. There is no advice or 12 step program that can save you from yourself. Only Jesus Christ, a Savior who really saves, can save you. Turn away from your sins and trust in Christ. Stop looking at what you did and did not do right and worrying that what you did or did not do has "unjustified you." If you have been justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone He will save you.

On the plus side, the fact that your sins keep horrifying you and bringing you back to the cross is a very good sign. Those who are not disturbed by their sins are the ones who need to question their standing before the Father. But those folks like yourself who keep being brought back to their knees by their sins, take heart! Listen to what Paul says!
Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
(Romans 7:13-25 ESV)
Study this chapter friend!

In short, it's not all about you! It's about Jesus Christ saving helpless sinners. Repent and trust in Him. Stop trying to find something you can do to save yourself and trust in Him. You will constantly struggle with sin and you will constantly fall. Having been justified and being sanctified is like living in a house infested with roaches. Every time you see a roach, step on it! You know of course that there are and will be more roaches. So keep stepping on them by the grace of God, knowing that only He can stop the infestation, and that He has not promised to stop this infestation this side of eternity. Be patient and keep stomping.

This is not to say that there aren't practical things you can do to have a better spiritual life. There are and the most important is to always have a constant, steady, and habitual devotional life. Daily Bible reading is a must. Weekly Church is a must. Spiritual Christian reading is a must. Not in order to be saved, but because if you have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, you're tired of constantly letting the roaches run over you and want to be a good child of the Father.

So examine youself friend! You seem to clearly have the weight of the Law on your heart. Have you repented AND trusted your salvation in Jesus Christ and Him alone? When I say Him alone, I mean not based on your personal performance, but on your clinging to Christ because of what He has done for sinners?

So examine yourself closely. Pray. If you are repenting and do trust fully in Christ that only He can save you, rejoice! Your sins are forgiven. Get out your Bible and start reading it every single day. As the Rastas like to say, "a chapter a day keeps the devil away." Pray every day. Go to a good Bible based church at least once a week. Fellowship with Christians. But remember, when you fall, don't fret over your salvation. Stomp the roach! Repent, remember that Christ saves sinners, and stomp the roach. You can't save yourself and the roaches will keep coming. But Christ will save His sheep. His blood covers them. Cling to Him and immerse yourself in Him.

For more advice, please go here. But most importantly, repent and trust in Christ. Get back up, dust the roaches off of you, and start stomping by the grace of God...not in order to be saved, but because He has drawn you back to Him by driving you to your knees as you realize the roaches all over you. But remember, you can't save yourself from yourself.

Brain "Head" Welch - Save Me From Myself (Lyrics) - YouTube

I hope this helps and God bless you dear friend!

I disagree. I was, and I hate the icon (which I used to own), the book (which I used to love and quote from), and the message (that I used to believe) that we must save ourselves and ascend a performance based ladder in order to be saved.

We can't save ourselves. A ladder is a horrible analogy for the love and work of God to save helpless sinners because it assumes that we're having to climb. A better analogy is that we're lying face down, dead in the ocean. Jesus Christ pulls us out of the water, puts us on the boat, and brings us back to life. We will fall down on deck (sometimes disturbingly often). But He will not let us fall off the boat. This is the Good News of a Savior who really saves. We work because we're saved and we'd saved because of Him who calls. The ladder Jacob saw had angels going up and down, doing His work on this fallen world. We can't climb it. We struggle here with sin because we love Jesus and those who love Him want to do His will. We do so not for reward, to acquire some Stoic/Buddhist/Eastern Orthodox/Neo-platonic powers of self control, or in order to have some "mystical experience." We work because we love Jesus Christ.

I never meant to suggest that the OP would completely fall off the ladder. Just fall down. My view of the ladder is continuing on the path of prayer, study, reading and bearing fruit. Many a time one falls when they neglect those things. Not saying that was the case with the OP, as I don't know his situation, but it happens. That was the point I was trying to make. Not an EO view of works (ie. sacraments, etc.).

Sorry if I offended. :)

Amen! Again, a healthy steady habitual devotional life is essential here.

I didn't think you were. I was just pointing out why I think it's a bad analogy.

Sorry if I offended. :)

^_^ You didn't brother! But performance based righteous (aka, the "good news" about a savior who makes salvation possible provided you do a bunch of works) disgusts me. Every single religion or philosophy (which has a notion of "salvation") is all about you you you and your works works works. Save yourself! Pull yourself up by your boot straps! Work harder loser!

This isn't good news. It's a lie of the devil. None of these religions, philosophies, or mystical practices do anything but make you trust in yourself. No one can stop sinning and no one can stand righteous before a Thrice Holy God unless Christ's blood, the lamb of God, is upon us.

So given our dear friend's question, I think it's important to be viciously clear about what it means to trust in yourself and what it means to trust in Jesus Christ. :)

I'm getting somewhat long in the tooth now but I learned years ago to stop worrying about the things I can't change and rest in the loving embrace of my Lord and Master, He knows what is in our hearts and that even though we struggle mightily in this life against the forces of darkness He is more than capable of bearing the burden for our sin if we only trust what He has told us from the cross to be true "it is finished".

To the OP I would also like to add you are no different than any other sinner including the apostle Paul:

For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. Romans 7:19-25

In these lines every true Christian reads his own experience.

"...one who is deeply distressed over the raging of his lusts and fears that he has never been soundly converted, is this: the fact is, that the more holy a person is, and the more his heart is truly sanctified, the more clearly does he perceive his corruptions and the more painfully does he feel the plague of his heart; while he utters his complaints in strong expressions and with bitterness of soul. In God’s light we see light I It is not that sin has greater control of us than formerly, but that we now have eyes to see its fearful workings, and our consciences are more sensitive to feel its guilt. Sorry I haven't posted back here in such a while, things have just been really busy.

I actually seem to have come up with the answer to these issues which I was going through, and that I believe was that in 2005 I had a emotional response to a sermon, rather than an actual salvific event. How quickly, and how deeply, after that I returned to the multitude of sinful ways in my life, truly led me to believe it was a false conversion.

So, here I sit now, hooked in with a great church, truly saved, and things so much different than ever before. I want to thank everyone for their great words in this thread though.
