In 1991, Jeffrey Burton Russell published his book Inventing the Flat Earth. THe thesis: that the flat earth was a myth invented by anti-Christians to make Christianity appear foolish.

Now the secularists are picking up on this fact, though, of course, they do not credit Russell for his major work on the subject.

We should be hearing less of the "bible speaks of a Flat Earth" and "Christians though the earth was flat" nonsense from now on. If we do, we have a readily available resource to refute it with.

Note that they are still trying to make Christianity out to be the ones responsible for the flat earth myth, despite the fact that Russell could find only two authors who believed in the flat earth in Columbus's day and the origins of the flat earth myth are rooted in pagan mythology.

So how does geocentric and heliocentric fit in with the church as I've heard so much about? In school I was taught it was Claudius Ptolemy who advocated the earth was the center and Nicolas Copernicus brought in the heliocentric ideas. Then Galileo fits in there someplace. Seems these ideas were hotly debated in the scientific community at those times also. So why does the church always get blamed for it?

because it is their way of blaming us for their own fault. it's like me saying "it's Christianity's fault that i didn't make enough money." they just want to blame us for everything if they can.

Pythagoras wasn't even an individual person by most accounts and had absolutely nothing to do with the Earth's flat or not flat debate.

Beowulf, despite the OP reference to a piece of nonsense the reason the church gets labelled with this is because almost every single church writing from the 3rd century until the 16th century that addresses this issue says the Earth is flat.

The book the OP refers to is quite simply considered garbage by secularists and Christians alike.

As I challenged earlier, read page 76 of the book. If you swallow that then by all means believe the rest of it.
I unfortunately lost my copy of Russell's work and don't remember what is on pg. 76. Care to quote it for us?

well, how do you know the earth isn't flat? have you seen it from space? I think that if its just as plausible that the earth could have been created within 6 24-hour-days, so could the fact that the earth is flat. remember, that on the first day, there was morning and night, but on the forth day the sun and moon was created. there is no need for a sun for daylight, or a moon for night. scientists try to come up with silly ideas that "make sense". don't believe them. like a big bang! what is that? they claim to have proof from pictures in space, showing how the universe was forming billions of years ago! ha! and dinosaurs, they co-existed with us, but we killed them off, becuase man is superior to the animal kingdom. physics is a farce. evolution is a farce. science is a farce! only trust what the bible says, because it says so! :amen:

Anyone care to explain their thoughts on this one? Actually on reading it closer I think someone is poking fun at Creationism.

Some people need to be a little less quick on the report button. (SDC?)

I did not debate Creationism in my now deleted response and the OP Adam149 even asked to elaborate on the contents of pg 76 of the book in question.

This endless reporting anything unless it is a YEC love fest post is not conducive to anything.

I did not debate in this thread and the reporters are just making this their own little empire to inflate their egos it seems.

God Bless All and lighten up a little.

I agree with Amalthea. Care to explain the intent of your post Jeszaramuhamadarthamusrex?
