It's the church that is, but the church is intimately related to Mary.

yes, she is a type of the Church, but is not the Church. the Church is eternal, Mary is not. grace is eternal. Mary is a creature which is why she cannot be the Mediatrix of all graces, and grace cannot be quantified so she cannot be the Mediatrix of graces in general. the idea that grace goes through her is wrong.

The papacy has given birth to the list you're mentioning. They have all been developed through the papal office that your ecclesiology refuse to grant authority.

plus, there are traditional Catholics who have rejected the papacy, and they are no closer to us than they were when they first broke with Rome.

and according to the saints, there are more than a few. Constantinople does not always speak for the whole Church. we even have Sts Photius the great, Mark of Ephesus, and Gregory Palamas who are known as the Pillars of Orthodoxy for standing against Roman heresies

OP - I believe that you are correct. Most Catholics seem to believe that Catholics and Orthodox are pretty close in their theology, whereas Orthodox tend to disagree with this analysis.

I am not sure why the church of Rome is called Catholic while the Orthodox are not. WE ARE Catholic...in the original sense! Rome was but one Patriarchate among the others. She left...the others remain. Orthodoxy is worldwide...fully Catholic...even before the split, while Rome was relegated to the West. Rome "became" catholic BECAUSE of the split...it went against Church Council rulings by going into other Patriarchal territories.

It's about size.
The Roman Church is four times bigger than the EO so referring to a much smaller communion as the Catholic (Universal and for everyone) church would then as now be very confusing terminology.

except "universal" is not what Catholic means. Catholic means "according to the whole." which means if Rome has added to the Faith, they are not Catholic no matter their numbers.

I still mean for such a small fraction to call itself Catholic would be highly confusing and misleading.

well, we are actually the second largest denomination in the world, so we aren't that small. and, we know what catholic means, so it isn't hard to clarify.

It seems that many, if not most, Catholics that I meet seem to feel that Rome and Orthodoxy are really close to each other. They seem to think unification is going to happen soon. At the same time most Orthodox seem to feel, as do I, that the division is very great and unification is not possible soon.

How do I respectfully let them in on our position? Is there really any point in going there?

I like to remind Roman Catholics how much their Church changed before and after Vatican II in the 1960s. Then I tell them to reflect on how fractured their Church is because of it. Then I tell them to multiply that by 1000 years.

He is NOT the patriarch of our Church. He is the Patriarch of Constantinople, which basically means his turf is Turkey, Northern Greece and the Greek Diaspora. NOT the entire Church no matter how much the Western media seems to think so.
