  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just a thought. Hegel is associated with dialectical materialism...as if civilization grows by swinging between political powers...as if there was some deep metaphysical process at work. Which, I think, is pretty much nonsense. But it does seem obvious that politics swings like a pendulum. Not that there is any secret wisdom behind it, but just because the subjects are so complex that we are driving blind. We have to bump into each barrier hard enough to choose a new direction. Until we bump into the next complication and change again. It seems these days we are locked in against change. The pressure to change resulting from resistance to change can be seen in the rise of socialist candidates who never previously had any traction. The longer the powers in charge continue bashing into the wall without adjusting course, the harsher the change will be. And that, in turn, will require moderation of whatever it bashes into on its own trajectory. Hopefully this next wave will not be so intransigent. (Won't get fooled again. The Who)

God is in control. These are the last days before the tribulation. All will be accomplished. Hegel is partly right about a strange force guiding. But itsnot meta physical, it’s God.
Perhaps. And it would be wonderful if you were right. We all look forward eagerly for the trumpet. But I would offer you two cautions. One, there must be more than fifty significant moments in history where one major church leader or another promised the imminent return of Christ. And, of course, they were wrong. More importantly, they sometimes used this promise as a lever to make money or to gain advantage over other Christian voices. So I would encourage you to watch out for that. Second, consider II Thessalonians 3:16. Most Bible based Christians will tell you that Paul is writing to Christians who were so certain Christ was about to return that they just stopped being involved in the world and decided they would take the lead in waiting...and just expected others to take care of them. The lesson being we cannot use the expectation of Christ's imminent return to become "weary in well-doing". I'm not saying that of you. But I do see so many who choose to ignore the real evils that are rampant in the world...hunger, homelessness, discrimination, poverty, displacement and, instead, point to various pelvic issues and culture issues as evidence of the onset of tribulation. It just seems to be a 'head in the sand' type of theology. But I could be wrong.
