Sabbath in Eden - Bible fact affirmed by both Sunday and Sabbath groups

Often in "pop culture" it is assumed that only Sabbath keeping groups like Seventh-day Adventists will admit to the Bible fact that the Ten Commandments (including the Sabbath commandment) were the moral law of God even as far back as Eden. (So then no "taking God's name in vain" for Adam and Eve).

But as it turns out - a great many denominations are on record as admitting to this detail.

I am glad these Sunday sources all affirm the Ten Commandments for Christians.

Of course the reason that Sabbath keeping groups accept the Bible detail of the Sabbath in Eden -- and for all mankind -- includes some of the obvious texts.

Mark 2:27 "the Sabbath was made for mankind and not mankind for the Sabbath" -- which speaks of the "making" of both mankind and the Sabbath.

Gen 2:1-3 - the making of Sabbath
Gen 1-2:3 the making of mankind and the Sabbath.
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. 2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.


Ex 20:11 points make to that singular 7 day event for the making of the Sabbath.

Ex 20
11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Is 66:23 "from Sabbath to Sabbath shall mankind come before Me to worship"
Is 56:6-8 - gentiles specifically singled out for Sabbath keeping

And of course both the Sunday and Sabbath groups agree that the New Covenant of Jer 31:31-33 "I will write My LAW on their heart" was made "with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah"
Just as the TEN commandments with their command "Do not take God's name in vain" was included in the moral law of God given to Israel.

Nor does Christ in the Gospel dissolve this law in any way, but He considerably strengthens our obligation to obey it.

Although true believers are not under the law as a covenant of works, to be justified or condemned by it, yet it is of great use to them as well as to others, because as a rule of life it informs them of the will of God and their duty and directs and binds them to walk accordingly. It also reveals and exposes the sinful pollutions of their natures, hearts and lives, and using it for self-examination they may come to greater conviction of sin, greater humility and greater hatred of their sin. They will also gain a clearer sight of their need of Christ and the perfection of His own obedience. Moody says this in that sermon

"The Sabbath was binding in Eden, and it has been in force ever since. The fourth commandment begins with the word remember, showing that the Sabbath already existed when God wrote this law on the tables of stone at Sinai. How can men claim that this one commandment has been done away with when they will admit that the other nine are still binding?

I believe that the Sabbath question today is a vital one for the whole country. It is the burning question of the present time. If you give up the Sabbath the church goes; if you give up the church the home goes; and if the home goes the nation goes. That is the direction in which we are traveling.

The church of God is losing its power on account of so many people giving up the Sabbath, and using it to promote selfishness."

Both the "Baptist Confession of Faith" - sectn 19 and the "Westminster Confession of Faith" sectn 19 affirm the same point about the TEN Commandments as the moral law of God that is given in Eden.

The lack of depth in the accusations made in the post is reflected somewhat by this statement "Most Christian advocates of Sabbath observance are influenced by Ellen White" - as if all Christians who are not at war against God's 4th commandment -- take their doctrine from Ellen White when it comes to God's Sabbath Commandment.

That is such an extreme statement it is hard to overstate the level of its exaggeration.

Sunday is not the Sabbath Day of the Jewish Law Saturday is .. Sunday is the 1st day of the week not the 7th. Check your calendar. Also, if you are under the Jewish law you are under the curse of the law. Also .. "Let no man judge you in respect of new moons, or of sabbaths .. " You will do FAR better to read the New Testament than ALL the books written by Moodys and Westministers and whoevers.

Interesting thing about the verse you share....

Col 2:16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,
Col 2:17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

Many new versions go against the actual Greek text and ADD the word "were" to verse 17. They say, "which are a shadow of things which WERE to come." But that is added, it is not in the Greek... it is properly represented above. Which means, it is in present tense, they ARE (in Paul's day) a shadow of things to come. Still there, still pointing... still with meaning. But not to the Christian today.

Anyway... if you aren't keeping the Sabbath, there isn't anything to judge. Paul's assumption was that you were, and you shouldn't allow others to judge you because of it.

How do you know your understanding of church history is not flawed. I understand the bible is true because of the Holy Ghost. "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good, or to do evil?" Do you enter into the Lord's rest on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc? Are you a Jew under Moses law, or a Christian under the grace of Christ? Are you circumcised under the law? Do you light a fire on Saturday or Sunday or Monday or Tuesday? Are you son of the bondwoman or son of the free woman? Are you a historian/adherent of denominational organization or a Christian in the Word of God?
Colossians 2:16-17

Interestingly enough Albert Barnes, a noted Bible Commentator, states on Colossians 2:16, on the word “sabbatwn”:

“... Or of the Sabbath days - Greek, “of the Sabbaths.” The word Sabbath in the Old Testament is applied not only to the seventh day, but to all the days of holy rest that were observed by the Hebrews, and particularly to the beginning and close of their great festivals. There is, doubtless, reference to those days in this place, since the word is used in the plural number, and the apostle does not refer particularly to the Sabbath properly so called. There is no evidence from this passage that he would teach that there was no obligation to observe any holy time, for there is not the slightest reason to believe that he meant to teach that one of the ten commandments had ceased to be binding on mankind. If he had used the word in the singular number - “the Sabbath,” it would then, of course, have been clear that he meant to teach that that commandment had ceased to be binding, and that a Sabbath was no longer to be observed. But the use of the term in the plural number, and the connection, show that he had his eye on the great number of days which were observed by the Hebrews as festivals, as a part of their ceremonial and typical law, and not to the moral law, or the Ten Commandments. Furthermore, another noted Commentator, Adam Clarke, states on the same passage:

“... There is no intimation here that the Sabbath was done away, or that its moral use was superseded, by the introduction of Christianity. I have shown elsewhere that, Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, is a command of perpetual obligation, and can never be superseded but by the final termination of time. ...” - Adam Clarke, Colossians 2:16 Commentary. Even the Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary state:

“... the sabbath — Omit “THE,” which is not in the Greek (compare Note, see on Gal_4:10). “SABBATHS” (not “the sabbaths”) of the day of atonement and feast of tabernacles have come to an end with the Jewish services to which they belonged (Lev_23:32, Lev_23:37-39). The weekly sabbath rests on a more permanent foundation, having been instituted in Paradise to commemorate the completion of creation in six days. Lev_23:38 expressly distinguished “the sabbath of the Lord” from the other sabbaths. A positive precept is right because it is commanded, and ceases to be obligatory when abrogated; a moral precept is commanded eternally, because it is eternally right. If we could keep a perpetual sabbath, as we shall hereafter, the positive precept of the sabbath, one in each week, would not be needed. Heb_4:9, “rests,” Greek, “keeping of sabbath” (Isa_66:23). Also:

"Colossians 2 KJB, parallels Ephesians 2 KJB, and Hebrews 9-10 KJB. The language is the same. The "ordinances" in Colossians 2 deals with "shadows", such as the daily "meat and drink" offerings of a worldly sanctuary and carnal ordinances, the seasonal "feast days", the monthly "new moons", and the year based "sabbaths", in the singular, every 7 and 50th years, as Paul is citing Psalms 98:1-3; and Ezekiel 45:17 KJB with other texts.

The Sabbath of the LORD thy God is always called "my [as in God's] sabbaths", and the others in Leviticus 23:4 onward are called "your [the peoples] sabbaths" [Leviticus 26:35 KJB] which are "beside [given in addition to] the sabbaths of the LORD" [Leviticus 23:38 KJB]. It speaks of plural, "sabbath days" (or 'of sabbaths'). [7] Colossians 2, speaks of "sins" (Colossians 2:13), which is "transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4), of which the 4th Commandment (Exodus 20:8-11) is central, whereas the yearly (and of years) sabbaths are not given in the Ten Commandments at all.

Interestingly enough Albert Barnes, a noted Bible Commentator, states on Colossians 2:16, on the word “sabbatwn”:

“... Or of the Sabbath days - Greek, “of the Sabbaths.” The word Sabbath in the Old Testament is applied not only to the seventh day, but to all the days of holy rest that were observed by the Hebrews, and particularly to the beginning and close of their great festivals. There is, doubtless, reference to those days in this place, since the word is used in the plural number, and the apostle does not refer particularly to the Sabbath properly so called. There is no evidence from this passage that he would teach that there was no obligation to observe any holy time, for there is not the slightest reason to believe that he meant to teach that one of the ten commandments had ceased to be binding on mankind. If he had used the word in the singular number - “the Sabbath,” it would then, of course, have been clear that he meant to teach that that commandment had ceased to be binding, and that a Sabbath was no longer to be observed. But the use of the term in the plural number, and the connection, show that he had his eye on the great number of days which were observed by the Hebrews as festivals, as a part of their ceremonial and typical law, and not to the moral law, or the Ten Commandments. Furthermore, another noted Commentator, Adam Clarke, states on the same passage:

“... There is no intimation here that the Sabbath was done away, or that its moral use was superseded, by the introduction of Christianity. I have shown elsewhere that, Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, is a command of perpetual obligation, and can never be superseded but by the final termination of time. ...” - Adam Clarke, Colossians 2:16 Commentary. Even the Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary state:

“... the sabbath — Omit “THE,” which is not in the Greek (compare Note, see on Gal_4:10). “SABBATHS” (not “the sabbaths”) of the day of atonement and feast of tabernacles have come to an end with the Jewish services to which they belonged (Lev_23:32, Lev_23:37-39). The weekly sabbath rests on a more permanent foundation, having been instituted in Paradise to commemorate the completion of creation in six days. Lev_23:38 expressly distinguished “the sabbath of the Lord” from the other sabbaths. A positive precept is right because it is commanded, and ceases to be obligatory when abrogated; a moral precept is commanded eternally, because it is eternally right. If we could keep a perpetual sabbath, as we shall hereafter, the positive precept of the sabbath, one in each week, would not be needed. Heb_4:9, “rests,” Greek, “keeping of sabbath” (Isa_66:23). By your quoting of so many 'Commentators' I see easily who has led you astray. You would find like mindedness in the Jews who enlarged on the Law before Christ, who wrote book after book after book about the Law instead of simply obeying them. However .. I will ask you one thing, are you a Jew under the Law? If so you had better read up on Sabbath Laws, such as:

Check your calendar. Also, if you are under the Jewish law you are under the curse of the law.


New Covenant made with "the house of Israel and the house of Judah" Jer 31:31-33... are you under the NEW Covenant??

Ex 20 - TEN commandments given to Israel - includes "do not take God's name in vain" .. is it only a sin if "Jews" take God's name in vain - but not a sin if gentiles do it??

I cited the commentators for your benefit, not my authority. My authority is scripture (KJB). I desired to show you that we are not alone in what we teach from God's word.

Exodus 16 is in the wilderness, before they had homes, and that vs 29 is connected with the falling manna. If you will read Joshua 1-5, you will see something interesting in regards this.

God, the Father is our Father (over all) - Matthew 6:9; John 20:17, etc.

Jesus, the Son of The Father, is our Father (we His disciples, as little children) - Hebrews 2:13; Isaiah 8:16,18; John 13:33, etc.

The Holy Ghost is our Father (born again of/through)- John 3:3,5,7; 1 Peter 1:23, etc.

They (three) are Fathers in differing ways.

I guess Sabbath keepers better avoid photography, and draw no pictures: "Make no graven image." This will be my last word, as a Non Jew not under the Mosaic Law, but under the love of Christ which leads us by Spirit and Word not to sin.

That is a misunderstanding of 'make no graven image'.

Upon the Ark itself on either side was a golden (olive wood inside) Cherub (Exodus 25:19, 37:8). In Solomon's Temple there were larger ones made (1 Kings 6:24,25,26,27; 2 Chronicles 3:11,12)

There were images in the Sanctuary itself, upon the vail and walls, of angels, and nature (1 Kings 6:29,32,35; 2 Kings 25:16; Ezekiel 41:18).

Upon the Garments of the high priest were images of Pomegranates (Exodus 28:34, 39:26) and bells.

In Solomon's Temple, there were carved Oxen underneath the Sea (1 Kings 7:25,44).

They were allowed to make the bronze serpent in the wilderness (Numbers 21:8,9, which was later idolized and smashed; 2 Kings 18:4).

I do it for those who "read", and whose interest in the topic goes beyond "gaming".

Because it turns out there are a number of basic points on the Sabbath vs Sunday discussion - and one of them is that the Sabbath began in Eden.. a Bible "detail" sooooo incredibly obvious that even the Sunday groups admit it.

Which was the point... obviously

A point so irrefutable - as was demonstrated that even you could not touch it.

The citations from 'sunday' theologians, is cited for their inconsistency in their own statements. In one place they say something is eternal, unchanging, moral, etc from the beginning, etc, and yet in another place turn right round and twist what is plain, to suit their present thought and action on a single commandment (Exodus 20:8-11). They are right in a lot of what they say, except in the point wherein they contradict, not only themselves, but more importantly the scripture they cite as evidence.

[error 1] You are mistaken as to what the "mark of the Beast" is in the citation. It is not "going to church on Sunday". It is recognizing the authority of men over God, in the "changing [of] the Sabbath into Sunday, on the part of the Catholic church, without any authority from the Bible."

[error 3] The citation being cited (sic) supposedly come from the book, "The Mark of the Beast", which "work" was authored/compiled by Harvest Time Books, author Vance Ferrell - Store - Harvest Time Books.

I have the book (physical hard copy (paperback) in my lap as I type this. The Title page clearly says, "Part Two by E. G. White", which doesn't begin until page 113, which is citing from the Great Controversy (1888, 1911; page 493.1). [error 4] A person may search that book until the 'cows come home' (1 Samuel 6:7,14, hint, they're not coming back home) on Page 23 (or anywhere in that book) of "The Mark of the Beast" and never find that quotation as cited.

There is a close resemblance on Page 20 (PDF 19), which says this:

"... Question—How prove you that the Church hath power to command feasts and holy days? Answer— By the very act of changing the Sabbath Into Sunday, which Protestants allow of [by observing It}, and therefore they fondly contradict themselves, by keeping Sunday strictly, and breaking most other feasts commanded by the same church."—Priest Henry Tuberville, An Abridgment of the Christian Doctrine, p. 58 {Roman Catholic}. ..."

Another close resemblance is on Page 83 (PDF 82), which says this:

"... As the sign of the authority of the Catholic Church, papist writers cite “the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of . . because by keeping Sunday strictly they acknowledge the church’s power to ordain feasts and to command them under sin” (Abridgement of Christian Doctrine, p. 58, H. Tuberville). What then is the change of the Sabbath, but the sign or mark of the authority of the Romish Church—“the mark of the beast?” ..."

Where then does the actual quote come from?, not "The Mark of the Beast" by Harvest Time Books by Vance Ferrell, but rather it comes from, The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, more specifically:

The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, Volume 22 (1863); September 29, 1863; RH Vol. XXII. - Battle Creek, Mich, Third-day, -No. 18, "The Mark of the Beast, and Seal of the Living God. A Discourse on Rev. XIV, 9-12, By Eld. Moses Hull (Concluded.); page 138.10

Reader, will you acknowledge the power of the "mother of harlots?" Are you aware that you are doing so every time you keep Sunday as a holy day? If not, read the following challenge from a Roman Catholic Bishop: {September 29, 1863 JWe, ARSH 138.10} ..." - Advent Review, and Sabbath Herald, vol. 22


After Moses Hull, gave up the message, here's what happened to him:

"... Born in Waldo, Ohio, Hull was a member of the United Brethren Church in his teens. He joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1857, and became a prominent minister and debater for that denomination. In September 1863, Hull preached his last sermon as an Adventist minister."

[error 5] The citation doesn't even use proper ellipses, as the actual original sentence does not end at "without any authority from the Bible", but continues by saying, "... is thrown out as a sign of her power." That is misrepresentation.

Will you publically acknowledge your (these) errors, and I ask in charity (1 Cor. 13). In other words, when confronted with truth, in the place of previous deception (theirs) will you admit it and come out from among them and be ye separate?

(P.S. this isn't the only thing they royally mess up, and there are other 'citations' worse than this mess, even from multiple sources in differing years in two continents mashed together in a single 'source')

That is a misunderstanding of 'make no graven image'.

Upon the Ark itself on either side was a golden (olive wood inside) Cherub (Exodus 25:19, 37:8). In Solomon's Temple there were larger ones made (1 Kings 6:24,25,26,27; 2 Chronicles 3:11,12)

There were images in the Sanctuary itself, upon the vail and walls, of angels, and nature (1 Kings 6:29,32,35; 2 Kings 25:16; Ezekiel 41:18).

Upon the Garments of the high priest were images of Pomegranates (Exodus 28:34, 39:26) and bells.

In Solomon's Temple, there were carved Oxen underneath the Sea (1 Kings 7:25,44).

They were allowed to make the bronze serpent in the wilderness (Numbers 21:8,9, which was later idolized and smashed; 2 Kings 18:4).

If God wants to break his own commandment as David did eating the priests' bread what is that to you? Make sure YOU obey the commandment, you image maker under the Jewish law instead of the grace of the Gentiles (until the time of the Gentiles is fullfilled.)
