Romans 6, Freed from sin?

Romans 6:6-7 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin.

Whats everyone's thoughts on verse 6-7?

It seems to be teaching that our old self was crucified with Christ and the body of sin is dead (done away with), and we are no longer slaves to sin.

1) If this is the case, considering believers, where does sin come from if the body of sin is dead?

2) What does Paul mean we are freed from sin because the old self has died to it?

What does Paul mean when he says we were slaves to sin, but believers (in Christ) are no longer slaves to sin, but have been set free?

Interesting thread - wish i have been around for it before it went quiet.

I browsed over all the posts reading some in depth but not all and there are some very good posts .
But what i was looking for is testimony .. it is a bit thin on that.

I do see one thing that repeats itself so often on the topic of sin .and that is the self justifying allowance for it in our own lives .
I strongly wish we would not do this .

Yes we are weak and at times we sin even though we are free from it - but it is still sin is still wrong and we must still repent of it - not ever accept it because we are weak . Why should we ? God is strong and not weak - he has set us free ,not bound in slavery to sin.

which brings me to the point of testimony .Im going to use an extreme open and obvious example.
Romans ch 6 ,is certainly becoming one of my Favorite ,because through it the Holy Spirit revealed to me the TRUTH of my state of "self perceived" bondage to habitual willful sin .

I should add , though i'm fully open to correction, i believe Paul is speaking of obvious willful sin- doing that which we know in our conscience is wrong to do (as those born again of the Spirit of God )

I was once bound (i have testified of it openly and often on CF) to the horrific degrading destructive sin of masturbation fed by porn . it is a hateful and self loathing self despising relationship destroying demonic wickedness .BUT- i never accepted it - i only ever acknowledged it as SIN in my life - i did not become self deceived and begin justifying it with lame doctrinal excuse - my wicked heart tried to- but holding on in faith i believed that God is true and the sin a lie .

But God has set me free, so free i live in a place of victorious REST. not struggling not striving .I do not have any part with that sin any more - at all! free.. period.

but how ? why ?
romans chapter 6 ! GO READ IT.. and ch 5 and 7 and 8 ...you get the point .

after so many years of internal self loathing and consistent repeated repentance the holy Spirit showed me the truth and it hurt .

I asked God - why oh why do i keep returning to this sin like a dog to vomit .
every-time i repent and ask forgiveness you forgive me and i know i am at peace with you .. why then do i go back and do it again knowing that your word says I have been set free.

and then the Holy Spirit said to me - you have been set free"to choose". Those bound in unbelief are prisoners to sin. they have no true choice . but by the blood of Christ the POWER sin held you in has been broken and you are free .
you continue in this sin because you CHOOSE TO .

I was stunned into silence .later i said but lord you have been so good to me so merciful you took me through 7 long years of backslidden darkness lost in wanton life and drug addiction. like Nebuchadnezzar you cast me out into the world and yet there you kept me protected me and then lifted me lovingly back to you in mercy. so that all that has been accomplished in me is YOUR work and to YOUR glory . i love you so much .. i will show you i do

so i got up - i believed in his word -that I have been set free to choose
and i CHOSE JESUS ..and have never looked at porn nor gratified the deceitful desire of the flesh in sexual immorality again .

thus Romans chapter 6 means exactly what it says .

for to whom YOU(BY CHOICE) yield your member to obey, his servant you are to whom YOU(BY CHOICE ) obey .

THIS is what Romans chapter 6 means to me .

Jesus said take up your cross and follow me - DIE TO YOURSELF .. don't do whatever the flesh wants - you don't have to any more - if you don't believe that ..your not a christian because to be a christian you must be A BELEIVER
