Evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are major underpinnings of mainstream science. And Georgia Republican Rep. Paul Broun, a physician who sits on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, says they are “lies straight from the pit of hell.”

...

A religious man speaking to a religious audience says evolution theories are lies from hell?
This is news?

I don't see the problem.

Probably runs counter to his duties as House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. But with Akin on there as well it seems like a nice little club for mouth breathers. Evolution has important consequences for current threats to our biodiversity, such as habitat destruction, global warming, ecosystem processes deregulation, land use changes, etc. Ignoring that, well, you can say goodbye to the Pika:

If his religious perspective is informing his decisions on science, such as budgeting for the NSF or EPA, I'd be very uncomfortable with his decisions. I hope that he's just pandering to his base and he's not as stupid a man as he's willing to appear.

There is only one evolution theory, the others that he refers to are not evolution. And you see no problem in that guy sitting on the Science committee? Amazing.

ok, I did miss that part.
Hard to make decisions to support theories you don't believe in.

Evolution has many aspects, many points to agree/disagree with. Many strong points and some weak.

I would not feel comfortable with a person sitting on this commitee without him explaining why he should. My main concern would be funneling money to debunk the theory rather then actually furthering science/scientific process(continual evaluating what is known versus beliefs, not just limited to religious beliefs.).

Isn't Paul Broun an MD? I'd almost be willing to bet he doesn't actually believe that crap. He's just saying it to appeal to his constituents because it is what they want to hear.

If true it really doesn't say much about his integrity. I wouldn't want him as my doctor if he tells me I don't have cancer just because that's what I want to hear.

Charlie Fuqua, the Republican candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives who called for expelling Muslims from the United States in his book, also wrote in support for instituting the death penalty for "rebellious children."

In "God's Law," Fuqua's 2012 book, the candidate wrote that while parents love their children, a process could be set up to allow for the institution of the death penalty for "rebellious children," according to the Arkansas Times. Fuqua, who is anti-abortion, points out that the course of action involved in sentencing a child to death is described in the Bible and would involve judicial approval. While it is unlikely that many parents would seek to have their children killed by the government, Fuqua wrote, such power would serve as a way to stop rebellious children.

People with obviously closed minds on multiple issues of science for what are purely religious reasons are entitled to their opinion but they should never make any decisions for our government regarding science.

It would be a bit like putting a member of the Christian scientists movement in charge of our health and human services department.

To get an MD 1971 you would not necessarily have to be well acquainted with the concepts of evolutionary biology.

Hooray! Let's call people who disagree with us names!

Your profile says you're twenty years old. Shouldn't you have grown out of this about ten years ago?

Disagreement is one thing. Being an ignoramus is another.

It's also somewhat worse when said ignoramus is in a position to actually affect policy.

It's not because he says things we disagree with, it's because he says things that are moronic.

Even if they drive people away by tying Christianity to things that are definitely false?

that evolution is a satanic lie used to battle Holy Scripture?

What part of that is false?
