Yes, Ctay, you are right, "reputation" was originally meant to be a way of rewarding people for good post. When I came to CF more than four years ago, that is how we used it. I gained my first 40,000 or so points that way.

Then it was changed. It was fun, we've all had some good times.

The harm comes when you start realizing that people are hurting themselves and their families to continue something that has absolutely no bearing on reputation. It's a game, and it's addictive.

We've joked about that as well. We've talked about our "repaholic" habit. The actuality is that it IS addictive.

It's time to see it for what it is.

I've been talking to several other people; several of us are coming to feel the same way.

If the rep cap increases let's call it something else. Let's divorce it completely from the idea of "reputation."

Who is hurting themself ?
and if they are, wouldn't this just get replaced by somehting else ?
That (that someone might be hurting themself) is the worst reason to get rid of it. After all someone Might be hurting them self just by spending time on the forum.

True. But the quest for "reputation" is more insidious than just outright gaming. Therefore the need for a change in name.

BTW, I am not saying that we should get rid of it. I am saying let's not remove the cap.
But you're saying don't remove the cap because someone might get hurt.

How long does it take to pass out 40 reps? Not long at all. I have a few socks and still it's way less than an hour. As such I resent the implication that people like me are spending many hours a day on reps to the detriment of their family. Really how dare you say that I think games are more important than my family. What gives you that right?

I'm saying don't remove the cap because this is an insidious game that has already hurt people.

It has also brought out the worst in others. I'm tired of it parading itself as "reputation" when it's not.

Maybe not you, Avatar, but others have been hurt.

Don't get so offended. I'm not talking about you personally.

how do you get hurt??? Just curious

At the point where you begin planning your day around the time your reps come in, at that point you are beginning to fall into a trap.

If you believe that your worth on this board is tied to your reputation value, you have fallen into that same trap.

If you manipulate others by whether or not you will rep them, the insidious influence of this trap spreads.

It's a trap. It's like any other online game. For some it has no hold, for others it's addictive.

Well *Reps* have been a *game* to me for about a year... It's not a matter of *addiction* I just play to win... (Winning as I define it is having the ability to give the most ) I don't really care what they are called, as long as it is a fun and appealing name ???

Reps
Game points
etc.

When I first came I gave and received *reps* for multiple reasons... good post, nice avatar, nice home page, good siggy, thanks for blessings etc...

I have *struggled* (though also participated) with the idea of buying/selling them, but I give away far more then I have ever sold. My socks give me the ability to give without asking anything in return or I may ask that the person I am repping rep someone else...

I believe it would have been better to not raise them to 40 Reps per day, that would have greatly slowed the growth, but it was not my decision...

I plan to continue to play as long as I am here and I don't plan to leave voluntarily...

I am not aware of anyone who has actually been *harmed* by Rep games... I can see how some can get *hooked* on the idea of them ??? There are many far more harmful addictions, if anyone believes they are being *hurt* by them they should stop... the first thing to do when you realize you are in a hole is to stop digging...

That's my .02

God Bless,
Ty

PS I would like to see the cap raised...

I respect your view, Ty, and your input. Yes, you are a generous person. I have witnessed that several times in this repaholic forum.

I realize that for some people gaming is not a problem. For others it is addictive. Whether they realize it or not, they are caught in a hole that is not easy to walk away from.

I am not saying that we should do away with "reputation" points, but that we should give them a name that has nothing to do with reputation. Also that we should cap them.

If the cap is removed, then move "reputation" to a game forum and take them off people's right hand "fact sheet." These points have absolutely NOTHING to do with either a person's reputation or character, so why should they appear as though they do?

If it is a problem, it is up to the person being affected to act or NOT act as the case may be, clearly we are to be mastered by nothing according to the Scriptures... (I think CF Staff has far better things to be concerned about here then whether or not a poster is spending too much time repping???)

There will always be a cap... the question is whether of not it should be raised? Again this thread is the first I have heard or known that someone is being *harmed* ??? Still not sure *where/how* actual *harm* is involved??

Perhaps this is a way of escape for some so they are not involved in more *harmful* activities?

God Bless,
Ty

I have been a game player for several months now, and also an observer. People are being harmed.

I don't expect them to post here. I am trying to speak for them, as best I can.

I'm sticking up for Ariel's views on this and I also believe some have gotten hurt (or hurt others) thru the rep thang.

And depending on how your reps come in, you can spend hours on here a day trying to spend them. We had asked for the 24 hr. rep cycle thing to stop with a lot of people on a request - that would stop alot of the headache right there and make this more enjoyable and simple.

And as of a few months ago before the majority of trades went 'off the boards', we WERE spending hours and hours per day. The reason not many are now is becuz participation at CF (& this forum) is way down and most trade off the boards (or use sox).
It did keep people from things - I know it did me. Yes it's a choice, but it can be addicting and it was fun.
I think computer time (any computer time) can take away from things we should be doing in real life.

It's not an attack on anybody here, I'm just saying it how it is for some or even many who stopped coming here for different reasons.

I wish they would keep a cap on it (raise it to 5 or 10 bill. & let that be it - and Ty had a good thought too, raising to 40 might of been a little high (altho months back, we were whining for 50 becuz 40 wasn't enough) ^_^ :swoon: :p

Ariel's got valid points. Personally, I'm very tired and fatigued from trading & the rep thing.
What's bothered me is that I wonder how much of a game it is when you play all by yourself & do all our trading off the boards without any fellowship here anymore. I think that's a main thing that's bothered me about what's happened w/ reps.
I like trading w/ people, but still the fellowship isn't there - so it's just a matter of scrambling to get points. :/

& Not everyone has sox and do rely on others for rep gain so it is more time consuming for some than others. And God forbid you have anything mess up your rep cycle (like CF being down, or power outage or phone lines down, or you had to go somewhere)!
& you better have all your rep'ees lined up & ready to hit, or else you'll get rep creep where you spend them one at a time, here & there.

I'll probly set my own number (goal) & then just quietly retire & just do some minor trading... it just gets to be too much after awhile.
Hopefully just do some stuff on the boards if anyone's still around.

I like reps fine, just that it isn't anything like it used to be and it's taken some joy out of it for me personally - plus it's been exhausting after so many months.

I know some have been yes - and I won't name names either.

I agree w/ your posts - just that it mite not apply to everybody, so not everybody should take your statements personally as if you're attacking them becuz you aren't. You're point of view is just as valid as any others.

There's good and bad in all of this stuff. It is what we make of it.
I think once we let go & just stop gaining in reps, we can see it alot more objectively when we're 'out of the loop' (so to speak) and it doesn't have any hold over us. It can definitely be addictive.

Yes I know what you mean too. I feel addictive to the rep thing and the fellowship seems to be lost now. I hope a lot of newbies sign up so maybe it will make it better. I don' t know?

Nadiine, I've been thinking about what you said about less fellowship.

I don't know about you, but the reason I don't go to the fellowship forums much is because people rep me. Then they expect me to rep them back. Sometimes I do, but often I don't. Then some of those reppers get irritated, after all don't I "owe" them a rep? Well, frankly, I don't, Pr. Steve taught me that. But it makes for some bad feelings sometimes.
