Yes. School always started back in Feb. here in NZ, when it was at its hottest, and we just lived for swimming class each day.

Remember playing Bullrush? (I'm not sure if that's a universal game or not) :)

how bout baseball at the vacant lot down the road?

Bullrush is where everyone lines up across the field, with one person standing in the middle of the field, facing them. When someone yells "Bullrush!" everyone runs past that person in the middle to the other side of the field. The person in the middle has to stay in the middle, and tries to tag people as they all rush past, and anyone tagged has to join the first person in the middle. Everyone turns round and "bullrushes" back across the field, again with the people in the middle trying to tag as many others as possible on their way through. The winner is the last person left from the original line who has escaped being tagged.

We used to get the 3rd formers shrieking at lunchtime when we were 6th formers by taking them out onto the field and playing Bullrush with them. They loved it!! ^_^ Especially when there about 40 of us lined up on the field playing! Great fun!!

Yes, every now and then my family would go to the larger city up the road a bit ;) to shop. The major excitement for me as a 6 year old was getting to see the parrot that lived on the rooftop cafe and play area of a large department store! :D
I was an army brat, so no major excitement I can remember

Remember no cell phones? How did we survive!
I don't have a cell phone. :D My girls have one each, though, and they're good for keeping in touch. My girls would agree that they're an essential item! ;)

I can remember the excitement of going to Columbus, Ohio, and the huge Lazarus store (it recently completely closed:cry: ). The most fun was riding the escaltor from the 2nd sub-basement all the way to the 6th floor where the toys were, and, and Christmas time, the REAL Santa!;) :)

Are you sure it was the real Santa? Cos we had the real, real Santa at our store. ;)

Do you remember the whole ritual of leaving out some food and drink for Santa every Christmas Eve? It was carried out with great solemnity by 4 very excited children in our home. We usually left out a glass of milk and a couple of biscuits for Santa. ^_^

Do you mean in the shops, Rich? Here in NZ the shops are decorated as early as October! When I was a kid we decorated our tree on Christmas Eve, or sometime in that week leading up to Christmas Day.

Remember coins in the ol' Christmas pud? (My nana used to put silver threepenny bits in it, and we loved coming across one!) ^_^

Yes. And for many children presents on Christmas morning seem to be a thing of the past too. Often in recent years, in the week or two preceding Christmas Day, I've been in a big store and seen parents asking their kids what they want for Christmas, and buying it for them - kids aged only 5-10 or so. And one large store here has a huge sale on Boxing Day and I know many people who wait till then, and then take their children there to buy presents for them. Where's the anticipation and delight in surprises, for these children? :(
