One of my NDN friends on Facebook started this petition. It is a petition to Facebook to allow Native Americans to use their Native names on their profiles. I have already signed it, but I'm not holding my breath that Facebook will listen to our voice. My friend said that at least our voice will be heard.

When I first joined Facebook, I tried to write my first and last name in Cherokee, but I was told that it wasn't allowed, because it wasn't a real name. So, I wrote my name in English instead. Of course, it's a real name, it's my name. It was very frustrating for me to say the least.

I hope they let you guys do that. It seems like that shouldn't be a problem. My Hebrew name is Nechemya or נְחֶמְיָה but Jews go by their non-Hebrew name most of the time.

Yeah, no kidding.

I would say though it's important not to overly generalize. It veers into prejudice to judge people for the actions of their ancestors.

You should have heard some of the things I've been told what NDNs do over the years by people who aren't NDN.

A member of my extended family, I'm not sure of the relationship but it isn't immediate, is a Cherokee and accepted by the tribe from what I've been told. At a gathering I attended, she sang Amazing Grace in Cherokee.

People shouldn't do that for sure. My wife had to deal with a lot of stuff going up including actually being called "Christ-killer" by some of her classmates. It's not something she forgets easily.

That's so awful. I really feel sorry for your wife. I know from personal experience that deep wounds like that do not heal.

And such statements are coming from Christians no doubt. I have been called a savage and a heathen by certain Christians. I've even been called a pagan. And as I said in an earlier post, this abuse and mistreatment toward me has come from Caucasian Protestant Christians. I know this upsets people when I say that, but it's the truth and I can't deny its truth. I have never experienced any hostility or discrimination from Caucasian Catholics or other minority Christians. I have always been accepted and treated with respect by them, not so with the other Protestant Christians. It's a sad truth that I can't ignore.

Sadly, I have had my share of confrontations with non-Christian NDNs who have fought with me for being a Christian over the years.

Honest and open debate is fine, but yeah fighting isn't. I've debated plenty of Christians in my life over Jesus and such but very rarely have I fought. Usually that comes up when someone directly insults me.

Unfortunately, many times it was not an honest and open debate. It was a personal attack against my character and NDN identity.

I've seen Jewish people attack other Jews who converted to Christianity. In our faith it actually cuts you off from the community, so while I don't agree with the attacking it is a serious thing.

Indeed. I know in my tiny minority community there are more than a few jerks. That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of good, wonderful people in the rest of the community that make up for the bad ones.

I basically feel the same way of stories told about Jews. Of course, that means I'm pretty skeptical of the New Testament's description of my people.
