Sufjan Stevens -- A Sun Came (which completes my Sufjan collection, as long as you count burnt copies and exclude vinyl {this is the only one that I don't own legally})

How is this one? I've been thinking about getting it, but haven't really heard anything about it.

It's not too shabby. I've only listened to it once through so far, but it seems to have elements of all his other albums, without really claiming an identity. It's Sufjan, so you know it's not bad. I can't really say I disagree with the pitchfork review:

Seven Swans might be his best. The more I listen to A Sun Came, the more impressed I am by individual songs. Don't listen to The Theory.

Nice. That is quite possibly the most fun album ever.


And for the record, I think Seven Swans is not only my favorite Sufjan album, but one of my favorite records of all-time. I've had it for almost two years now and it is still new, intimate, mysterious, and moving all at once.

A Sun Came is better than Jacob (Theory) makes it out to be, but I find that the glimpses of Sufjan's genius as a songwriter don't really shine through until later in his career. I love the song "Happy Birthday" though. He played it as an encore when I saw him in September and it was absolutely beautiful.

Oh, and I picked up the new Derek Webb album, Mockingbird. I'm not sure he'll ever top She Must and Shall Go Free, but there are some good tracks on here. Especially "King & a Kingdom", if only for lines like this:

Yeah, I'm loving it..."LadyFlash" is a great song. Yeah, I believe my friend is burning me a copy of Seven Swans, can't wait to listen to it after all this praise I've heard about it. I need to buy the new Derek Webb as well...maybe I'll download that off iTunes too...still have 15.00 in credit...
