Many people remember an event a certain way, but a large majority of people remember the event the way it is being recounted.

One way of explaining this is stating that they died in an alternate universe and merged with their still living self in this universe. This is why they still have their memories from the other universe still in tact. However, some of those events "didn't happen anymore"

This is one of many explanations.
