• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For memories we are not sure of… we are not sure.

For memories we are sure of… we have a good reason for being sure.

And how sure we are about a memory has no connection to how accurate it is.

The wealth of scientific evidence supports my claim. Memory is not reliable, and there's nothing special about your memory.

If you want to find memory unreliable, you can find this out.

If you want to find memory reliable, you can find this out.

Both are true, neither is true.

So you just pick and choose what you want to believe? That's not how reality works.

Mere skepticism.

Nah, evidence-based science.

You find memory reliable quite often.

Sometimes you don't.

Nah, evidence-based science.

The observer changes the outcome of the experiment.

If your memory is correct, you are different and special. If your memory is false you are no different to everyone else, so you are not special.

Your desire to be special is not "a good reason for being sure". It is just egocentricity.

Often it is, but with the kind of every day thing that isn't really that important. I have a memory of making toast for my breakfast this morning, for example. But my memory that I left the jar of Vegemite with the label facing away from the wall could very well be mistaken, and perhaps I left the jar with the label facing the wall instead.

The observer changes the outcome of the experiment.

Which doesn't apply in this case, since that only applies to quantum mechanics, not studies of Human memory.

How about: "Thou shalt provide evidence to support the claims thou maketh, or thou shalt not be considered a purveyor of facts."

The irony is… I'm sharing the evidence.

Nah you're not. You're just making claims and then saying that anyone who disagrees with you is closed minded, or too skeptical, etc. The only thing you've provided is stories from people who really believe what they think they remember.
