A jaybird taking the easy way of getting food in our garden.

I didn't know the English name of this bird until now, it's apparently "great spotted woodpecker". In my mother tongue we call it just "colorful woodpecker".

A siskin in our garden. We live at the edge of a forest so we get all kinds of animals (including birds) in our garden, fantastic for photographs.

Ooh I love mallard ducks! Once when I was walking on a trail around a lake where there are loads of them, I saw a female that was just standing in the middle of the trail, so I said "hello" and she followed me for about a mile halfway around the lake before she saw a break in the shrubbery that she liked and went off into the lake! People walkng the trail the other way really gave us some strange looks!

This is the January bird in the bird wall calendar I have! While we have woodpeckers in my area, we don't have this particular woodpecker, so it's neat to see another view of it!

Probably at other birds eating in that direction. We used to put a lot of feeding-places in the winter.

@bekkilyn Once a couple of mallard ducks landed in our pond to take a bath. The pond looked terrible afterwards because they swirled up the ground so much

Here they are taking off again. Typically: the female gracefully, the male like a rocket through the ceiling.

I find it fascinating how ducks sleep on 1 leg with 1 eye open. I can't sleep on 2 legs even, certainly not with an open eye.
