I've read through the whole thread and don't think this question was ever answered, but it's something I've wondered about myself. Is there any truth to this? Pretty much everyone seems to buy icons for themselves.I have also heard, that icons ought to be a gift, not a purchase ?
My wife works as a translator/interpreter, and as such wanted an icon of St Jerome and of St Ambrose of Optina to put in her office. We had no issue with commissioning iconographers to paint the icons. On saying that, we have received a number of icons as gifts, but most are icons we bought (the majority are prints)I've read through the whole thread and don't think this question was ever answered, but it's something I've wondered about myself.
