RC here with a quick question:

It's my understanding Monastery Icons used to have many more Eastern Saints, then stopped, and now mostly have RC Saints with some pre-schism saints.

They're not even Christian. They're Hindu or some Gnostic mix? Not even a real monastery?

Correct. They used to 'bless' their icons with a pagan ritual. Avoid them like the plague.

I have also heard, that icons ought to be a gift, not a purchase ?

I've read through the whole thread and don't think this question was ever answered, but it's something I've wondered about myself. Is there any truth to this? Pretty much everyone seems to buy icons for themselves.

My wife works as a translator/interpreter, and as such wanted an icon of St Jerome and of St Ambrose of Optina to put in her office. We had no issue with commissioning iconographers to paint the icons. On saying that, we have received a number of icons as gifts, but most are icons we bought (the majority are prints)

Indeed, several of my icons have been gifts and others I have purchased.

We buy most of our icons from our church bookstore. We also bought one from Legacy icons. Some members of our church gave us some icons as well. We are starting to have a nice icon corner.
