But that doesn't mean it has only lost 2,000 off the top. It still has lost the 10,000 feet but its just grown again to make up for it. Ok well as far as I understood fossils only ended up in the sedimentary layers. For a fossil to form it has to be covered and not left on the surface for being scavenged or eroding away itself. So it needs to be covered pretty quickly by sediments or maybe fall into a swamp or sea and sink to the bottom and get covered. But Igneous rock wont have fossils as they are to hot and subject to the heat of the lower layers in the earth.Yeah, so?
And you still need sedimentary rock to form the upper part of the mountain, and that's where the fossils are. It is likely that many fossils have been destroyed by erosion in the way you suggest, but you seem to be under the impression that fossils only occur in a narrow layer of sedimentary rock. This is not true. When one layer and the fossils within it are eroded, they are lost forever, but they reveal the layers below, and thus the fossils contained in those layers.

Fossil layers are fossils that formed in sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rock is rock that is formed in layers by the depositing and pressing of sediments on top of each other.

Sorry I got sidetracked. Well my point is from what I understand if the sediment layers are about as deep as the grand canyon on average as an example which are about 1800 meters deep. So erosion eats away sediment at about 4 or 5 mm a year on average. So for a 20 million year old mountain that would take away about 1 meter every 200 years. So thats 5 meters in a 1000 years. Thats 500 meters in a 100,000 years. So where already up to nearly a third of that sediment layer gone in just 1/10 of a million years let alone 20 million years. So wouldn't the sediment layers on mountains be completely gone 10 times over by now even if you take into consideration they still push up from underneath. The tops still gets erodes. So after a while the whole mountain will disappear and be replaced with the rocks below it which are not sedimentary bit solid granite or igneous rocks.Steve, still waiting for your point here...
Yes but thats on or near the ground. We are talking about on top of mountains where the erosion is much greater. It is said that a complete mountain can be eroded away in millions of years. The only reason it still stands is because it is growing still from bottom up. But the tops of them and probably at least to half way down and beyond has disappeared over time and been replaced by new rocks. the sedimentary rocks at the top have long gone and are replaced with granite or igneous rocks from below.When you drive around the country, notice the layers and layers in the mountains where they have been cut away to make roadways. The sedimentary layers don't stop at 20 feet or so, they go down a long long ways, and eroding a lot off the top can still leave sedimentary layers exposed.
