  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Progressive music is possibly my favourite genre. The music is so complex and it's so satisfying to listen to. If you don't know what prog music is, you've probably heard it anyway. Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Rush, Dream Theater, Frank Zappa, Mars Volta, Queensryche, Marillion and Jethro Tull to name just a few.

anyone like prog music here? i hope i'm not alone

Prog is quite the awsome genre, I'm not too into it, but i do enjoy the likes of Dream Theater, Symphony X, Queensryche, and of course, Rush. Although i would say that Dream Theater and Symphony X are more Prog metal, its still progessive nontheless

Progressive music falls into many genres

I guess prog is for the acquired taste

Yeah, Queensrÿche is awesome. I'm also into assorted songs from various other artists.

I also absolutely love Industrial music, which, while technically not prog by standard definition, its origins were heavily influenced by Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream.

I love prog.:D It's my most listened to type of music. I'll avoid doing a massive list of bands i like which no one will read and instead say i like some of those up there plus a lot more. I really never thought radiohead or the mars volta were prog though, experimental.. yeah, but all the while great bands.

I have heard of Dream Theater. I have yet to hear their music, though.

cutting edge music .................. mix Queen with Pink Floyd and then throw in Metallica ;) then you have something approximating their direction .....

strictly for those who like the more electric side of Prog ..... Prog / Metal

but for me it has to have great tunes and a great singer and Dream Theater has that in spades.

LTE was made by Dream Theater's guitarist, if you didn't know.

Actually, to be more accurate, LTE was made by Dream Theater's guitarist, drummer, and current keyboard player (DT actually recruited him during the LTE recordings).

That's why DT plays a lot of the LTE stuff live - because three out of the four LTE guys are also in DT. :)

I wouldn't necessarily say "prog is an acquired taste", because there's such a wide variety of music represented in this list. I loved symphonic prog from the moment my ears first encountered it (ah, Yessongs, how I loved ye!), but it took me a while to adjust to some of the more abstract- and/or abrasive-sounding groups clustered under Zeuhl, RIO, etc. I really dig half of the genres listed here (especially krautrock, spacerock and RIO), but don't like seeing them all placed under a single "progressive rock" umbrella. Maybe it's just the micro-pigeonholing that I take issue with...

not everyone wants to listen to 10 minute +, epic, complex tracks. which seems to be a preconception of the genre.

I see your point; however, some of the classic symphonic prog bands have shorter tunes (Yes and Jethro Tull immediately come to mind) that get plenty of radio play. Also... If no one wants to hear long, epic tunes, why is "Stairway to Heaven" one of the most overplayed classic-rock radio songs ever? (Granted it's not "progressive", but it does fall into the 10-minute-epic category...)

Oh, how could I ever forget Om Rock? Too bad Progarchives seems to have overlooked that one; Hillage is listed under "fusion", Gong is lumped into Canterbury/RIO/avant-prog, and I'm at a loss...
