I'm posting here, cause this is where I'd probably get the best answers, cause most everybody here has had or is going to have a child.

:help: I went to the doctor today, and I found out that I tested postive for Group b Strep. My doctor didn't tell me exacty what it was. He just told me I had to have antibotics during labor. I thought nothing of it, I came home and did my regular routine. About an hour ago, I got on baby center and looked up things they do when your pregnant. Well I found what I tested postive for, and it has me scared to death. THis could really harm my baby, even kill my baby. I didn't have it 4 years ago with my son, I just don't understand. How does on get this? They say it's not a STD, so what is it and why me? And why could my doctor explain this to me? Has anybody else tested postive for GBS? Or do you have any info about it, cause I'm freaked, and no one else is around to talk about this with. Also, am I freakin' for no reason, or do i have a right to be concerned.

I found a website for you with all kinds of info about it :

www.groupbstrep.org

As far as how you got it, this is what I found on that website :

GBS is a naturally occurring bacterium in the human body of both women and men. Since it is commonly found in the vagina, some people wonder whether GBS is a sexually transmitted disease. The answer is No. GBS bacteria usually do not cause genital symptoms or discomfort and are not linked with increased sexual activity. Women found to carry GBS do not need to change their sexual practices.

I know you're worried, but it sounds like antibiotics administered during labor effective combats any ill effects your baby might have. The real danger seems to be women who carry the bacteria and are NOT diagnosed before they deliver.

I'll say a prayer for you and your little one, though :)

Love, Heather

Do not worry, everything will be fine.
You will go to the hospital as soon as you start labour(not when your contractions are close) or when your water breaks. They will give you antibiotics and you and baby will be safe and healthy.
My good friend(she had her 2nd baby 10 days before I had mine) had the same thing. I am not a doctor, nor do I know very much about the condition, but to my understanding it is very common.
God has you and the little one in His hands, He loves you both and will care for you-you are His child, He is your Father.

Thanks for your prayers and thanks for your advice, I did alot of reading last night, and it does seem to be pretty common. I still haven't found anything that's say how you get it. If it's not a STD then how does a person end up with it?

Guess what, I'm sick today, and my throat and ears hurt. Because of this strep B, the doctor doesn't want to put me on antibotics right now cause I might get ammune to them and the antibotics might not work during labor. So I have to stick it out and suffer. I'd rather have it this way though. I baby means more to me than being sick. Life is really rotten right now.

You poor girl. I'll say a prayer for you. I remember how yucky it was being sick while I was pregnant. I didn't take cold medicine because I didn't want to expose the baby to it. LOL, I didn't even drink caffeine (no tea, no Dr. Pepper :(). The things we suffer through for the well being of our kids, huh? I hope you feel better soon.

I'm sorry you haven't felt good! I had that strep w/ my second. With my first they didn't test me for it because they didn't do that test then! So I most likely had it but neither my baby or I were treated for it and we were both fine. With my second they treated me during labor and just added it to my drip. Nothing went wrong and I didn't even know it was there. I honestly forget I had it until someone brings it up! I will keep you in my prayers but try not to worry too much about it....you and your baby are in the Best hands!

Peace~

HMM, Did you ever found out how you got it? I've searched everywhere and no body knows. I'm just wondering, if there's something I could of done differently. They say its not a STD and you can't give it to your hubby, so I'm really confused. Thanks for telling me about you. I'm still kind-of nervous, I'm due any day!!!!

Hey,
I have GBS and have had 3 healthy kids. From what I understand the only way to get it is at birth (maybe not, but that's all I've seen about it). The bacteria is stronger sometimes than others, but if you are GBS+ you always will be. So be comforted; you had one baby without even knowing you had GBS; how much safer this delivery will be now that you know and will treat for it!

Also, if you can only get GBS in birth, that means your mother had it, and you got it, but you are fine, right?

Don't be concerned. GBS can do wicked things to a baby, but only a small percentage get it, and only a small percentage of those have problems.

Ask your doctor. If you don't ask, they assume you know everything and won't tell you anything.

As far as I know you do have to be born w/ it. It's almost like a skin type. I am also prone to another kind of bacteria, empitigo (sp?), and if I blow my nose too much or wipe my face off in one area enough times I get a bacterial infection. I dunno!!!! I'm sure you and baby will be healthy! Congratulations and blessings on you and your little one!
