hello. read a book recently on congregation care. A "illness" kit was talked about,
included was either a prayer quilt or prayer shawl
questions. quilts are a lot of work and can be expensive to make. I was wondering
on the quilts, is there a cloth (fabric) that would be suitable to be used on the
top without quilting. Also, do you sew all over, or just do the outside, and in
the middle just use pieces of string, that a knot is tie into ?

second, if prayer shawl, again due to labor and cost, was thinking a knitting machine
and buy yarn in bulk.

anyone make or do the above ?

or is there an economical place for the above items ?

thank you

A series of most interesting questions there, polkaman. My late grandmother created a large quilt for each of her 20+ grandchildren. I am sure that she prayed some while working on the quilts. She was a very religious lady. However, I guess that I cannot call the quilts prayer shawls as such.

My wife just finished off a king size quilt for our oldest daughter (the final one for our kids) out of material her mom left when she passed. (she could have stocked a small fabric store) It is all wool (good for their New England winters) with flannel backing. It ships tonight. She is also about ready to ship 3 more quilts for Foster kids cared for by our youngest daughter. They will go out this weekend.

Do you have a design in mind?

well as an update. You can make simple blankets. They usually use fleece
material, partly due to lower cost, and is warm. You take two pieces
of the cloth, and you "tie" them together, so just about anyone can
do it, don't need a sewing machine, just just a pair of sisors.
That could be a cost efficient idea for pray blankets for folks in the hospital
or those with chronic medical conditions, or serious medical conditions.
Also maybe gifts for those in the nursing homes. They have various prints
and perhaps find their interest or favorite team, and some of the prints
have team logo's and other such things.
looks like it takes 2 yards of the top, and 2 yards on top, and 2 yards of
the bottom material.

I think it be nice if you had one of the blankets, a special devotional,
which I saw one for illness, in cokesburry, and it was reasonable,
with 20 of them in a package. buy some bibles by the box, and
put one in, and maybe a sack or two of candy.

if interested let me know and I can post a link on youtube
where you can see how they do it.

Women at my church have done this - they do a small washcloth looking prayer piece, and sometimes have done a larger version. I haven't had a long shawl or blanket before, though.
I am not sure those would be big enough to be called "shawls." I have heard them called prayer cloths.

Acts 19:11 God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out.

A number of churches have "Prayer Shawl" ministries where folks who like to knit, crochet, etc. meet on a scheduled day and time and work on their projects together and pray. You might get some information by doing a internet search.
