Being of Chinese descent and currently living in Beijing, I am very much aware of the Persecuted Church. After the tyrannical rule of Mao Zedong, who used the Cultural Revolution to destroy much of China's Christian heritage (though it can be argued that the bulk of it was eliminated as a result of the Taiping Rebellion), the Chinese Communist Party legalised most religions (although it currently persecutes the Falun Gong faith).
Despite this, Chinese Christians have to be registered and monitored by the police. Chinese Catholics, like me, are forced to join the Patriotic Catholic Association if we want to practice are faith. The Communist Party appoints the PAC's bishops, while in Catholicism the bishops should be appointed by the Holy See. Thus the Communist Party replaces the Holy See, which is unjust in the eyes of most Chinese Catholics. Thus many Catholics secretly pracise their faith and, if found out by the authorities, are often punished severely.
This is not only the same for China...the Christians of Egypt, Syria, North Korea, Lebanon, Sudan...they are all persecuted despite believing in a religion of love. It is quite ironic that many of us talk so much about the Crusades, the Inquisition, the pedophile scandals and any other controversy related to the Church, but largely ignore the Christians who are currently persecuted for simply preaching love to their neighbours.
I pray to all my brothers and sisters being persecuted for following in Jesus our Lord and Saviour.
