Attendees of the Southern Baptist Convention's Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas, next week will consider eight proposed resolutions on a diverse range of issues.

The SBC Committee on Resolutions released the list of the eight proposed measures last week, ranging from commending Dallas for hosting the event and honoring the centennial anniversary of the Cooperative Program, to serious cultural issues, such as banning pornography and overturning the legalization of gay marriage.

Here are five notable proposed resolutions that will be considered at the SBC's Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." - Matthew 28:19-20

Hey, SBC. How about we get back to the Great Commission rather than culture wars?

They are following the Antonio Gramsci and other Neo-Marxists playbook. The way to power is through cultural ideas and influence. This type of thinking supplanted Marx's ideas that economics was the key to power and revolution. Gramsci took it further countering with "cultural hegemony." This has infiltrated the church. To me it is not necessarily bad but not as biblical as making disciples. One would think they could do both, but the focus indeed has shifted too far to politics and other culture wars as you mention.

They gotta make sure of the important stuff! Like rooting out "liberalism", making sure females don't get too uppity, and building circular firing squads and claiming transparency.

Meanwhile -- SBC numbers could be better.

It's not even culture wars. It's more virtue signaling. As a Southern Baptist, I can say that. I've no problem with resolutions addressing denomination doctrinal issues, but does anything in the upcoming resolutions address anything that really needs to be said?

FWIW, here is a PDF of the proposed resolutions:

If the SBC needs to address sports betting to make denomination doctrine clear, why not all betting? My cynicism hits that it's because it would strike at state lotteries and those aren't about to go away anytime soon. I would have thought positions on other moral issues was already clear.

This post is a good illustration of something that the SBC leadership has missed form time to time: There is no way that the world is going to like Southern Baptists. First, it's a Christian denomination. Second, it has Southern in the name. Third, it tends to be fundamentalist. There have been past resolutions that looked to me like the SBC was trying to win favor with the world. If you'll pardon by bad English, that ain't going to happen.

What, then? Should the SBC change doctrine to suit the world for the sale of attendance numbers? Isn't it better to preach what God commands even if the entire world turns a deaf ear to it and goes away? Or should the SBC fear falling so far out of favor with the world that it runs after it, like a middle grade student trying to sit at the cool kids' table?

Would you be surprised to learn I'm a Southern Baptist too?
