We should not condemn them but we should not like their sin either.

Love the sinner but hate the sin. :)

BTW drinking alcohol is not a sin unless it is in drunkeness.

Smoking is not a sin, afaik.

You know you aren't drunk with a glass of wine. :)
Not me. I get drunk just looking at a drunk person, my tolerance is shameful since the time I got alcohol poisoning and stopped drinking for a while.
Now when I merely breath the alcohol off someone elses glass I get tipsy.

I understand and appreciate your posiion. Alcohol can be very destructive and has ruined many lives. But I can't find any scriptures that forbide drinking. If you have, please share them.

Here is one to ponder: Ephesians 5:18, "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit." Consider who Paul was writing this to, the city of Ephesus was known in ancient times for its orgies and debauchery. They would drink fermented wine and all hell would break loose, these were the type of Gentile Christians that Paul was writing to, to encourage them in their walk with Jesus and warning them to avoid going back to their former lifestyle. Paul's words apply with just as much force today, have you ever been to Las Vegas?

It states don't get drunk with wine. Drunkenness is a sin just like being a glutton and eating too much. It would be a lack of self control. The fruit of the spirit is temperance.

Yes, I have been to Vegas only long enough to preach to a dying man.

Says who? If you are drinking fermented wine it has alcohol, and alcohol impairs the brain. Considering the fact that the majority of human beings on planet earth already seem to have a greater or lesser degree of impairment when it comes to comprehending spiritual things why would you want degrade your moral powers of the brain with strong drink? When you do the Devil is laughing out loud!

There is an OT one that saus do not drink of the grape. I think it is Jeremiah. But even this scripture must be taken in context.

I think the main thing is not to become a fool and that means to get drunk. Being a fool was a huge insult in scripture and I thin k we have lost much of how deep this goes and why.

Do you really think that you have enough self control to drink wine or beer or any number of other alcoholic beverages and at the same time you will have complete self control? The safest path is to not even go there! That is the only way to not grieve the Holy Spirit.

Smoking is not a sin, afaik.

Why not?

It really has no strong benefits. It has some very serious health issues. It is like taking poisons. But the Catechism does relate to those that are ignorant and those that do so as a habit/addiction.

In OBOB we had a crazy thread on this because there are enough Catholic smokers to start a debate there. But it still boils down to taking care of our temple.

Let me dig up some:

2291 The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law.
It says use of drugs and not illegal drugs, it continues with those that inflict grave damage to human health and life. Cigarettes have been proven to be a serious health risk and even to cause deaths.

* I just realized you are not Catholic...

Jesus drank from the vine...

Scripture does not say we cannot drink.

I just use wine when my heart gets a little overweight:
Pr 31:6 - Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

I enjoy some wine once in awhile.

We just started making our own and I hope our first batch turns out good.

Sure that would be the safest path especially today. But its still not forbidden according to scripture.

Prior to getting saved I was able at times to control how much I drank when I wanted to.

I agree its best not to drink but there is no law against it. In order to take a stand against something we should have Biblical proof.

Pope Benedict smoking a filter king

I think a king has a right to smoke a cancer stick if he wants to.
You do realize that this is a manufactured picture, do'nt you?

Reve 17:2 with whom prostituted the kings of the land and are made drunk the ones dwelling on the land out of the wine of the prostitution of Her

You are aware the Bible is not speaking about real wine, aren't you?
