  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ya think?

And not a very good one at that.

Personally I do not find these types of pictures as humorous. The present Pope is a very good man and a holy man and I can only guess that some people hate men like this because they feel less holy or righteous when compared to them. So they feel the need to knock these good men down with lies. Kind of pathetic if you ask me.

I found a similar picture in the sacristy trash can shortly after he was elected pope. The sad part of this particular picture is that it appears to me Benedict XVI is vested and saying mass which makes the idea that he's smoking even more ludicrous. I'm not sure if the site that picture was posted from was a spoof or not, but I'm surprised that anyone would think it's real.

Why? I sat next to a priest at my dad's kegger and he was sucking
on liquor, what's the difference?
Besides, for sure nobody is without sin.
Look around you next time you go outside.
Think America got obese by the fruit of the Spirit?
Dang flesh, it's weak.

I think it's fake, but would it really matter if he DID have a smoke? really.
Don't matter to me a bit.
I'll bet my pastor has some bad habits.

I've known many priests that smoke and drink. I don't condemn any because I know all about the flesh being in one myself. And the scriptures tell us we are all men of like passions.

Ac 10:25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.
Ac 10:26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

Ac 14:15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

Jas 5:17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

And I believe its important to keep in mind that we are forbidden to exalt any man above another.

Ac 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Jame 2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Europe's Smoking Culture Lingers, Despite Bans By CHRISTINA PASSARIELLO
b.gif

Lighting up doesn't carry the social stigma in Europe that it carries in the U.S. Many famous Europeans -- including the Pope, French soccer star Zinedine Zidane and Britain's Prince Harry -- have been known to puff in private without burning their public image. U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, on the other hand, has spoken publicly about the pressure he feels to quit smoking.

Can anyone here on this forum really picture Jesus smoking? The Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write in I Corinthians 6:19-20, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." Tell me how in the name of God that a man, Pope Benedict, who claims to represent God on earth could put a cigarette to his mouth and inhale nicotine, and say that that glorifies God!

Yes, for a Catholic it would. He is expected to be more Christ like than most. He is expected to live according the teachings of the Church. The Pope is in the spot light and anything that he does that is seen as sinful is compounded greatly due to his position.

The Catechism teaches that the body is the temple for the Holy Spirit and we are to take care of the temple in all manner of ways. Physically speaking we know that smoking is harmful because it causes cancer and emphysema and other physical ailments. So the Pope or any Ctaholic figure best not smoke since it would be seen as a sin. Not just because the person was doing damage to their temple but because they were also in the spotlight for Billions of people and setting a bad example. All that felt it was OK to smoke from this one person smoking would be the cause of guilt to the Pope who endorses it through smoking himself. Of course if this happened 50 years ago when advertising said smoking was good for you, then it would be mute. But in our age where we know smoking causes harm and with no worthwhile benefits then it should be avoided or not done at all.

Believe it or not but Catholics expect more from the Pope and the Bishops than any one else.

We should not condemn them but we should not like their sin either.

Love the sinner but hate the sin. :)

BTW drinking alcohol is not a sin unless it is in drunkeness.

True. To condemn would be wrong but to judge something as sin according to scripture is not.

I agree, there is no scripture stating that drinking is a sin. But drunkenness would be.

Tell me this, how do know when once you take a drink of alcohol that you are drunk? Paul said to "be filled with the Spirit", not will spirits! As Christians we should avoid all alcoholic beverages.
