Yep, in my region in history, the flatboats traveled one direction with the current downstream to land at a point in the river and then was broken down along with the supplies to partially construct a shelter. The keelboats were actual boats going both ways on the river so used sails and oars and poles and ropes to go back upstream. And so they carried trade items both ways. Then crew were called river rats.
So then eventually river pirates would rob both flatboats and keelboats. Life is never easy. But then if caught a gruesome end without a trial with heads on pikes.
