Profiting from someone's willful ignorance of our national language is pandering. Profiting from their disregard for immigration law is even worse.

But isn't that what capitalism is all about? Profit?

And if Latin American immigrants began to learn English, then they might actually learn they have rights. They might do things like report unsafe working conditions, or demand the minimum wage.

Let's face it: quite a few of the moneyed elite would rather that not happen. And herein lies the schizophrenia of the Right in addressing illegal immigration.

Just look outside. Bilingual bus stops, bilingual bathrooms, bilingual education, bilingual ballots, bilingual everything under the sun. My family didn't need such special treatment. Hispanics are no less capable. The equal protection clause should prevent Hispanics would being treated differently from other ethnic groups.

Hmm, yes, you do have a point there. I'm from Colorado so I suppose I don't notice these things as much as we don't tend to have that many Hispanic immigrants, or immigrants at all really, in the part of the state where I live. However I do think that when people come to the US at first they need help and support to build up their confidence levels in English if they're not used to the language, but there comes a point when people need to stand on their own two feet.

If there is too much 'buffeting' of the language barrier then it may actually dissuade immigrants from adopting the language.

I've been in the UK for a while now and the problems you mention are even more profound. Cases where you have classes for 6-7 year olds where the overwhelming majority are not native to the UK and speak very little, if any, English. This forces schools to hire teaching assistants with knowledge of the languages in question, which slows down the learning of all involved. If people want to come to the UK, or US, to learn and live, then welcome them with open arms I say. But our primary language is English, and you should learn it if you wish to remain here. It's not that much to ask.

Businessmen and politicians are subject to the same laws as everyone else.

And if Latin American immigrants began to learn English, then they might actually learn they have rights.

So be it. Learn English before engaging in political activities. Otherwise, I can't understand you and don't care.

Let's face it: quite a few of the moneyed elite would rather that not happen. And herein lies the schizophrenia of the Right in addressing illegal immigration.

I'm neither left nor right. A true conservative would respect the law.

It's not that simple!

If you've ever had to learn a foreign language, you know that it isn't as simple as waving a magic wand and instantly learning english. It takes time, effort, and practice.

You say that potato chip bags are quote-unquote "pandering" to immigrants by displaying multiple languages. I think you need to get over it. Until immigrants learn our language, I don't see any harm in multi language potato chip bags.

This isn't a matter of who "won" or "lost" - it's a matter of having respect for the time it takes to learn a foreign language from scratch.

I recommend you follow the following link and read this article from the Religious Herald. It states the case much better than I can.

Learn English or get out. It's worked for most of our nation's history.

That's exactly why giving special treatment to the wilfully ignorant is unfair to those who follow the rules.

My family didn't need special treatment.

That is simply not true. There have always been immigrants that have stuck to their original language.
I'm not saying it's a good idea, but it's nothing new and nothing to get upset about. In Mexico there are literal American towns where expatriates and vacationers live. Mexicans in these areas "pander" to these Americans by speaking english so that they get their business.

Why would you assume I was a criminal just because I violated a civil statute to work and feed my family. I guess those liberals still believe in innocent until proven guilty.

If you are undocumented, we have no way of knowing. That's the whole point that liberals and corporatists willfully disregard.

It's strange, your in Mexico... but you could easily be somewhere in Southern Califirnia. Check out Puerto Penasco, known by most people as Rocky Point. People here in Arizona often refer to it as the Arizona coast... you can stay in a 4-Star resort for about $100 a night.

You can't become a citizen without learning English.

Please stop evading the point like a political partisan. Unless you have papers, I have no way of knowing whether you are a criminal. Are all immigrants criminals? Of course not. I have a right to protect myself from liberal activism.

Por favor parada que evade el punto como un partidario político. A menos que usted tenga papeles, yo no tengo manera de saber si usted es un criminal. ¿Son todos criminales de inmigrantes? Claro que no. Tengo un derecho de protegerse de la activismo liberal.

It's good that they require English.. but the level of English required isn't really that high, nor do all immigrants get citizenship... there are probably hundreds of thousands of green card holders in the US... many of whom will never apply for citizenship.

You can't become a citizen without learning English.

Having papers doesn't prove I'm not a criminal... the vast majority of criminals in this nation are citizens. You want everyone to have papers then let anyone without a criminal record who wants to work here in the US come across with legal status and the right to work. Criminalize the hiring of people without legal status and beef up the border. The floods of people without legal status who just want to work will have a legitimate channel, and border patrol will only have to deal with drug runners and other criminals trying to cross the border.

My Spanish is marginal and conversational, Muchos Gracias, Por favor Una Cervesa, ect... the only language beside English I'm fluent in is German.

Even green card holders learn English. Hispanics don't need nor deserve special treatment.

As I've said before, businessmen and politicians should be subject to the same laws as everyone else.

I don't think anyone is saying they should get special treatment... I want them to be treated the same as my ancestors were treated when they immigrated from Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Many do learn English, and that's good for them... it means they will have a lot more opportunity, than if they didn't.

Gracias.

What if the law is just dumb?
Like the law in Maine where the law states that Shotguns are required to be taken to church in the event of a Native American attack.

I guess if that is what the law says you must treat it as dogma as it seems you are insinuating. And forcing someone to learn a language is no less dumb I suppose.

If I'm not mistaken, it's against the law to live in this country without learning the language. Please correct me otherwise.

In Maryland the law says that Oral sex can not be given or received anywhere. How often do you think that law is broken? And do you think we should punish these "law breakers"?
