I don't think there really is one American culture... I grew up in the military "sub-culture" then in the South, then I joined the military, traveled the world, settled in Arizona when I retired and have participated primarily in Neo-pagan sub-cultures. The culture I have experianced my whole life is completly diffferant from someone who grew up poor in the midwest, rich in the south, middle class in Maine... and that is one of the things that is really cool about the United States.

No, not a Wikipedia article. Have you grown up in the United States? Did you ever read American authors? Have you listened to American music, as propelled by African-Americans, Appalachians, etc.? Have you ever watched a classic American film? What do you know concerning American history?

Do laws stop someone intent on committing rape, murder, or theft? In other words being there are laws against rape, murder, and theft, did the laws put an end to rape, murder, and theft?

It's no more or less true for Hispanics than it is for anyone else... why do you suppose liberals and corporatists would believe such a thing? I'm fairly liberal (and proud of it) and I don't see how thier being treated any differant... except, the fact that we try to control the number that come here. I believe we should abandon all qotas and return to the ideal displayed on the statue of liberty:

I'm not sure the whole "melting pot" idea is the best metaphore though... were more like Jambalaya.. the sausage is still sausage, the shrimp is still shrimp, the tomatoes are still tomatoes... but together we create something unique and wonderful.

Like not bringing shotguns to church in the event of a Native American attack would be willful disregard for the rules of law in Maine. If a law is a dumb law there is no "rational" reason to follow it.

The equal protection clause bars Hispanics from being treated differently from other ethnic groups.
