Wow I love your night shots! I've never been good at taking nighttime photos at all. I really need a good tutorial on those. I love all three of these photos, especially the beach one. I would love to travel to that beach and take my own photos.
Question for everyone - With July 4th coming up, has anyone ever taken photos of Fireworks? I have and I'll post them in a bit, but I've never been real great at them. For anyone who has, or knows a little bit about what it takes to create a good shot like that, could you give me some tips on taking pictures of them?
For night shots in general, you absolutely need a tripod (or at least somewhere to rest your camera). It also helps to have a remote, but if you don't, you can use the self-timer on your camera to take the shot. The reason for using the remote/timer is that you don't want to touch the camera when you're shooting, so the camera doesn't shake at all. Try F11 with about 2 seconds exposure for starters and work from there, depending on whether you want a lighter or darker shot.
As for fireworks, I work out where the fireworks will be, setup my camera on a tripod, plug in the remote and set the exposure and f-stop manually (usually F6 to F9 or similar, and from 1-4 seconds exposure depending on light) so the camera doesn't need to change them when you shoot. The last trick is to focus once, then turn your auto-focus OFF. That stops the camera from hunting around when the sky is dark trying to focus when you want to be taking a shot.
If you do this, you can then just sit next to your camera and watch the fireworks, and every time you see one you want a picture of, just press your remote button and the camera will do the rest.
