Perhaps the most disturbing video game ever...

Seriously, what Japan produces some days is really really disturbing. Sometimes Japan produces some weird but otherwise very fun (and family friendly) games to play, but I have stumbled across a game that is beyond disturbing. In this game, the player is able to slowly freeze, burn, or electrocute a child to death, or otherwise torture her and force her to commit suicide. Now, this wouldn't be as bad if it was just the product of some sicko, but it is actually produced by one of the major video game producers in Japan. Even worse, this game is quite popular, and is actually sold as being suitable for children to play (or so claims the game). But perhaps the most disturbing thing is the cult following it has in America, with numerous websites hosted, many depicting suicide scenes.

Uh-huh. Sure there is....

And then made a game about it.

That said, each country has its...quirks, only some are less open about them than others.

Hey the only thing America is known for is hotdogs and baseball!

I'm kidding...

Actually it is. Merely the graphics don't make it nearly as bad as people are imagining it. If they did, if you could cast fire and then catch the child mage on fire and have her running around crying/screaming as she burned to death... the only difference is graphics (and sound) quality.

The the image I got from the original post is of a child tied up and slowly tortured to death in a real world setting. I would say that is different from attacking someone who is also trying to kill you in an equally painful way (which is what I assume is happening in the game) even if that is a child.

Obviously the more realistic it is the more disturbing it would be too.

I can't say I was expecting that response. I'm glad we agree.

I've been a gamer since I was 6. Video game have taught me a great deal, they are the reason I am a computer scientist right now, they have influenced me on numerous levels, especially being one of the biggest reasons I became an avid reader. In high school I did play them too much and my grades suffered, but they have done me more good than bad.

You have a 10 year old mage named Relmed whom you can cast fire/ice/bolt spells on and kill. Killing the 10 year old isn't banned at all, and can accidentally happen with bosses with reflect on them. Why is killing a 10 year old with 16 bit graphics so acceptable, but the more realistic games have completely forbidden it? Elsewhere, I had someone point out in Fallout 1/2 you can kill children enough so to earn a title for it, but in Fallout 3 they ban it.

On a side note, the possibility of killing children was removed in the European releases of Fallout 1 and 2. More specifically, the sprites were removed but the script for the floating text above their heads remained, so now you had these "disembodied" pieces of text floating in the air. That always made me wonder until I found out about the removed children.

I'm a nice person, so I've never actually tried killing kids in my version of Fallout.

...

Hang on.

Shortly after Rapelay came out one of my roommates wrote a research article about it. He obtained a copy of it and played through the game...I watched some of the game play...and it's really disturbing. I don't know why someone would come up with a game like that. I'm not for censorship...but I just don't understand why someone would make a video game about raping a family.

Not my idea of fun either. I much prefer fantasy RPG's like WoW. :)

I also don't understand why people watch horror films, yet it is normal in our society for young teens to watch stuff like that.

It is a bit old school, 16 bit graphics, called Final Fantasy 6.

What? You did not just besmirch the greatest video game series ever created! I hope Sephiroth has your head for this. Well 6 was Kefka wasn't it? That whole story was pretty bizarre, Kefka was insanely powerful and purely and completely evil with no purpose at all but to kill all of life unlike Sephiroth...beautiful hair, badazz theme song, and purpose, un-besmirchable! Seph also seems to be the most feared in FF Dissidia! Cus hes the greatest fictional villian ever!

Okay, Sephiroth has an awesome theme song but his praises get oversung (maybe it's just an overexposure thing)

Kefka is about that only final boss I've ever come across that I really, really wanted to kill. It felt personal. Now that's a good game villain. ::p

This! Kefka is hands down the best FF villain so far. As for the game, *shrugs* Japan is Japan and has a different culture. But yeah I know...think of the pixels! See what we should really be talking about is LA Noir.

Kefka's story is lame and he runs like an idiot in Dissidia. I personally think Kefka has a fan crowd for no other reason than that people want someone besides Sephiroth, they've gotten bored of him but Sephiroth is still the standard. I think Sephiroth eclipses Kefka in power. Sephiroth doesn't have an ego problem it appears that Sephiroth simply allowed Cloud to win more than once... and when he killed Aerith, done. Sephiroth cut a whole in the hearts of kids everywhere.

I think I'd rather take someone with an ego problem then someone with a mother complex.

Plus, Kefka actually destroyed the world, which is more than you can say for pretty boy over there.

hah I won't try to prove it becuase it's very off topic but I will say that I think Sephiroth beats Kefka in power and it was not a mother complex, now Kadaj, Yazu and the other guy yeh, Sephiroth no... and being pretty doesn't make your pretty boy. He was brutal and almost unstoppable. Kefka whined cus he had sand in his boots... Sephiroth never cried, cold as ice.

Pfft no reason? Every single badguy wants to take over/destroy the planet in RPGs it seems. Kefka did both; Sephiroth was thwarted. Kefka wins. Plus that laugh is awesome

As to the topic, I never understood all the fuss made over kids in games. I can run over little old ladies in GTA or I can sit there and carve someone's face off with a knife in Soldier of Fortune, but if your games pixels are in the shape of children and killable people go insane.
