Perhaps the most disturbing video game ever...

Seriously, what Japan produces some days is really really disturbing. Sometimes Japan produces some weird but otherwise very fun (and family friendly) games to play, but I have stumbled across a game that is beyond disturbing. In this game, the player is able to slowly freeze, burn, or electrocute a child to death, or otherwise torture her and force her to commit suicide. Now, this wouldn't be as bad if it was just the product of some sicko, but it is actually produced by one of the major video game producers in Japan. Even worse, this game is quite popular, and is actually sold as being suitable for children to play (or so claims the game). But perhaps the most disturbing thing is the cult following it has in America, with numerous websites hosted, many depicting suicide scenes.

Japan has alot of these wierd games, is it really any worse than games like GTA though? You roll down the road, kill people, run them over, set them on fire, comit crimes, sleep with then kill hookers.

They are all just a testament to the peculiarity of humans in general.

Wow, crazy games. I tend not to get so shocked over things these days though. I mean some films that are out, are even worse as you see it happening to real people. I find it strange that parents do allow children to play things like this though, I know I wouldnt.

The game described definitely does sound worse than GTA

You have a 10 year old mage named Relmed whom you can cast fire/ice/bolt spells on and kill. Killing the 10 year old isn't banned at all, and can accidentally happen with bosses with reflect on them. Why is killing a 10 year old with 16 bit graphics so acceptable, but the more realistic games have completely forbidden it? Elsewhere, I had someone point out in Fallout 1/2 you can kill children enough so to earn a title for it, but in Fallout 3 they ban it.

And, lest we forget, in those games if you do that, the decent folk react pretty negatively to that - and a gang of bounty hunters led by a character with the same name as the dev team head hunt you down and try and kill you.

Probably because it doesn't look like anything in 16 bit. :p

But, I do see what you're getting at. I agree that it shouldn't be acceptable in one, and unacceptable in another.

However, where we probably differ is that I don't think it should be banned for any game. Down with censorship.

So it isn't actually much like how you described it/ implied? ;)

Actually it is. Merely the graphics don't make it nearly as bad as people are imagining it. If they did, if you could cast fire and then catch the child mage on fire and have her running around crying/screaming as she burned to death... the only difference is graphics (and sound) quality.

People react realistically, which would be hoped for. But these days, they completely remove the option.

Actually we don't disagree. I would be fine with a game where you have ultimate freedom to do what you want.

Yes, I think the Fallout 1 method is the best way of voicing disapproval from the dev team while managing to both refrain from curtailing gameplay and manage to be realistic.

For me, I guess I'm warier of games for which the entire point is some dubious behaviour. I mean, perhaps I'm wrong, but I suspect RapeLay doesn't have a very engaging storyline.

Whereas the whole "OMYHWH you can chainsaw prostitutes in GTA" hysteria was over a minor, minor, MINOR part of the many things you could do in the game, and GTA is as much about satire, story and action than anything else.

That said, I wouldn't censor RapeLay etc. from being published, but I'd definitely be wary of a few of those who bought it.
