Tardigrades are quite old, they've been around long before the dinosaurs. initially the young earth was a quite hostile environment, life had to be robust.

Imo metaphorisis wasn't so confined to the insect world as it is today. But was more involved in mammals as well. There's evidence of regenerative capabilities in humans.

Even if some catastrophic event that wiped out the top layer of earths crust life is more robust. How quickly it can bounce back points to metamorphosis having a key role in species until the conditions improve then the adaptation etc. All through a vast network of stem cells that holds information that is past along about everything that was from the beginning and today.

There's various evidence of some elementary life beginning on Earth on the order of 4 billion years ago, very long before Tardigrades arrived perhaps about 550 million years ago.

Tardigrades are relatively advanced compared to the earliest life forms. Early life forms were not multicellular of course, etc. Tardigrades are large and multicellular compared to elementary life forms which would be like single celled creatures.

In 14 billion years, it is possible that other life evolved out there in the wider universe.

It's possible that rocks learned to dance quadrilles in that period of time as well, but we've no evidence that they did.
