  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

God? That's not science, that's science fiction. The universe does not have a god.

But, if there are an infinite number of universes, then all possibilities are true, including the possibility that there is an omnipotent god with power over all universes.

The bible doesn't say anything about parallel universes (dessert nomads didn't know about it so they couldn't write about it). It doesn't say anything about you either. Since your logic is right (otherwise you wouldn't believe it) is it also possibly to apply that logic to you. Therefor you don't exist which means that you never stated that opinion which in turn means you can't be right about your opinion due to not having it. Since your opinion (which never existed) is wrong must the opposite be true which means parallel universes exist.

Jet, it also says that the constants can change. Wether or not this allows the existence of a god type creature I dunno, would have to read more about how the constants change.

However the constants in our universe do not allow for a god, perhaps in another universe with different rules there is a god.

Dayton, that may or may not, be science fiction. You do not know what God created, nor, to what detail, quantity or magnitude. For you to say what God has or has not created is an act of hubris. For you to make such a bold statement projects that the thought of this idea scares you. Please remember folks that 500 years ago we thought the Earth was flat, WE (The Earth) was the center of the Universe and that EVERYTHING orbited us. Now we know we are a medium sized planet orbiting a medium sized, dying star, on the outer sub-burbs of one of the pin wheel arms of the Milky Way Galaxy. We have detected 171 planets at last count, not in our solar system and that is only what we can faintly observe through very high powered optics within our own Galaxy and have seen BILLIONS of other Galaxies!! People died for thinking out loud that the Earth was NOT flat and that there were planets other than Earth and our moon. Most of what we know has been about space and our place in it has been discovered in the last 10 years! Dayton quotes just like yours have echoed throughout history. Imagine how much we would already know if inquisitive voices had not been muffled and laughed at. It is only fear that keeps us ignorant. If you any real beliefs at all what is it that you have to fear, Dayton?

Ok, I've read a bit of that article, and it is FASCINATING. Essentially what it says is that the Universe is sooooooooooo vast, that there is a undeniable probability that galaxies, solar systems, planets, people and the like exists in various places throught the universe that are identicle to our own, but just not on the exact same time - i.e. a few years or minutes ahead of us or behind us. The theory is based on empiracle evidence that is both testible and falsifiable.

Now, I can understand how some may not LIKE to here such things as having a twin with identicle name, friends, dog, DNA and experiences as themselves - it's a little unnerving. But I wouldn't simply dismiss a theory which is both testible and falsifiable, and reflexively replace it with another concept which is neither. Unless, of course, you got a good reason to do so.

Why would God feel compelled to give us the whole story? The existance of these other universes does not affect our own and tampering with them via Einstein-Rosen Bridges would almost certainly have devastating effects on humanity.

I have been reading about parallel universes for years and years now. They are absolutely fascinating and I would love to major in Theoretical Physics so I can learn more about them.

For books on the topic try reading these:
Hyperspace by Michio Kaku
Timeline by Michael Crichton

Well if God had the capability of creating our universe why would he not create others? We can't be endlessly entertaining. You are still going on the assumption that they were made for the needs of the humans here.

Actually even if space is finite the Many-Worlds interpretation still holds true. I have heard very convincing evidence towards both sides of the story so I really don't know if it is finite or infinite.

Here's a theological implication:

If there are "infinite parallel universes" (multiple worlds interpretation-style), the notion that some occurances, say abiogenesis, are too statistically improbable to have happened on this particular Earth, is soundly refuted.

Dayton, Knowing the purpose of a parallel Universe would assume that we knew the purpose of the universe we live in! We have not even been past our own moon, not to mention, out of our own solar system and certainly not out of our own galaxy to explore the confirmed, billions of other galaxies in our own universe. What would be the purpose of anything outside of our own solar system, if we are all there is? Logically, there would be no need. Contemplate those questions before wondering what a parallel Universe may hold. It is not our design, so we are just left to ponder. You seem to be negating the existence of anything based solely on explanations and answers as to "need" and "purpose." What we do not know FAR outweighs what we do know, however, there is impressive data that does support the possibility of parallel Universes. We do not know where an object goes that falls into a black hole, then there are quasars, which some theorists speculate could be the end of a black hole from another universe terminating at our own Universe. Then there are speculation on Einstein-Rosen bridges. Just because we do not understand why does not negate existence. If that is the criteria, we could apply that to theology and have a field day.

What's so bad about parallel universes anyway?

Yes, that is the thing I am having trouble understanding. That and again, the time issue. Some of these people make the age of the Earth their "cross". Why? What does the age of the Earth prove or disprove, since, Christians say God is infinite and Eternal, has no beginning or end. Same for this parellel Universes...how would not having Parellel Universes substantiate any Biblical beliefs? There are things we HAVE found recently in our own Universe that HAVE been proved that some of these folks would say, "Can't be". Christians claim all things are possible through God, so... why are they putting the limitations of their minds on him? It is the contradictory statments and narrow thinking that I have a problem with.

A proper Christian response might be that though all things are possible through God does not mean all things have been done.

But you will have to wait for a proper Christian ;)

Dayton,

For you to speak as if you knew the mind of God, is quite a bold move.
the fact is you nor anyone else on this Earth knows all there is to know about God, or the universe.

As for the Bible, well, it is and interesting book, or collection of books, and letters, and stories that were written by MEN, and translated into many differant languages. Knowing that, we can't be certain that it is compleatly accurate.

It is compleatly within the realm of possability that God not only created this universe, but many more. We mite, or mite not be the first of these.
It is also possable, that God, is in reality, some scientest from another universe, and we are just a culture in his pitry dish. We just don't know, and that is what religion is for. It is a way for us to cope with the reality that we don't know what is out there.

You are entitled to your opinion, and your beliefes, but please, don't go around trying to quote them as if they, were the Gosple

that is my opinion

Does it every make you wonder, if the universe were only 6000 years old and God is "infinite", then what has God been doing for the last 6 billion years? I am not sure that the concept of something being infinite is in the Bible or if there is even such a thing. To be infinite means to have no beginning or no end, yet often time or distance is somehow still involved. We are told that He is the alpha and the omaga, the beginning and the end. In the Bible forever is eons and eons, or ages and ages. One age comes to an end, and another one begins.

That is more of a polytheistic belief, that the God or God's created man as sort of a plaything for their amusement. So if we make them happy then there is a better chance they will not make our life difficult.

The entire theory hinges on both matter and space being infinite. Without infinite matter you can only have a finite number of parallel universes.

The idea itself is sound, think of an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters/ink/paper with an infinite amount of time. They'd pound out every possible word/letter combination in every language that could ever exist.

The only thing missing from this theory is the indirect proof of these infinities. We do have some data to work with but it is far from complete.

I would like to know more about this subject. Can anyone assist me? :help:
