  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Parallel Universes

The cover story of Scientific American this past May states that infinite earths in parellel universes really exists. Apparently, current data show that space is probably infinite. In infinite space any event with a probability greater than 0 will happen. This would include parellel universes, people out there with identical memories to our own, and all kinds similar weirdness. Perhaps someone more knowledgable on the subject could elaborate. But, if all this is true, what are the theological implications?

Dayton, it is science and you are free to reject its claims. But, what in the bible precludes infinite space and its implications?

The Bible never says anything about parallel universes, it says God created the heavens and the earth. What would be the purpose of parallel universes?

Well, now you need to prove that the bible is true, and then your claims as to why there cant be parralel universes will have meaning.

LOL! What could be the theological implications? Scientific American is not a theological journal, so nothing they have to say has anything to do with God. Science can't observe the spiritual realm, can it?

Besides, what they mean by parallel universes is NOT the same thing as science fiction authors mean. They mean that there are other universes of the same or nearly the same scale, as opposed to universes of greatly variable magnitude.

As for space being infinite, give that concept some thought. Go ahead, spend one full day pondering the concept that space is infinite.

There is no evidence for the existence of parallel universes, only speculation. Pluto and platypi are observable, parallel universes are not.

LOL! What could be the theological implications?

I didn't realize that was a laughable question. Incidentally, I agree that there are no theological implications. But I am interested to hear the perspectives of others. If nothing science has to say has any effect on the theological views of some, then why are we in a science forum on a Christian forums website?

'cuz "scientists" (in this case, people who have some interest and a smattering of knowledge of science, not the people who are actively involved in real research), like to come here and challenge Christians to re-examine their faith in light of scientific theories, so a forum was opened to give a place for that to happen.

The entire theory hinges on both matter and space being infinite. Without infinite matter you can only have a finite number of parallel universes.

The idea itself is sound, think of an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters/ink/paper with an infinite amount of time. They'd pound out every possible word/letter combination in every language that could ever exist.

The only thing missing from this theory is the indirect proof of these infinities. We do have some data to work with but it is far from complete.

As for possible theological implications... It can be used either way.

In a multiverse where all possible outcomes and changes to constants are possible there would be a universe for each scenario. It could be that we live in one of the many universes with a god or without.
