  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Constantine was a sun worshiper. His coins were inscribed with "SOLI INVICTO COMITI," or companion to the sun god, until the day he died.

Paul drew from Menander, Euripides, Epimenides and a Cilician poet named Aratus. The quote saying in God “we live and move and have our being” was originally written for the idol Zeus. So if the apostle Paul can make use of poetry written to Zeus, then Christians can reinvent “pagan” holidays for the celebration of Jesus.

Acts 17:28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.”

Also, as far as I’ve read, the entire “it’s all paganism” slur against Christmas and Easter is just baseless. Inspiring Philosophy on YouTube has some great videos on the subject.

IMO lots of people want to be edgy and counter cultural so they trash anything just to feel superior, Christmas and Easter are easy targets.

Of those coins the top one is phony.

If you follow the link you'll see that this coins sold for a considerable price. Are you asserting that this international coin dealer is selling forgeries?

The side on the right is also phony "comiti" in Greek would be spelled "Komiti." So these coins don't prove anything.
Try reading Eusebius or Lactantius who knew Constantine.
The coin on the left should have Коνςταντην The coin on the right should have Σολι Ινικτο Κομιτι

I dont think you did enough research. I will update the original post later today and you can research from there to find the truth if really desire to understand the origins of these pagan holidays and how they entered the church.
...but what if you're simply wrong? I'm always a little confused why people who are very eager to explain to everyone how they've "researched this subject" seem to think that they're the ones who've done that therefore they're the only one who've come to the right conclusion, and the people that disagree with them are always the ones who are wrong and just "need to research this more!" and everyone would agree with them.

Yeah right. I've seen your proof before. I'm still waiting for you to get back to me with the carbon dating of the LXX fragments found at Qumran. LOL!

You stick to your unfounded opinions when you have no tangible evidence to back up your assertions; and you hold to your opinions even when you have solid empirical evidence refuting it, right in front of you.

This is basically it. It's a kind of weird intellectual gnosticism. "Ooo, look at me, I have this secret knowledge of how things really are that I'm now revealing to you, the people who do these things without knowing why. Look at all this truth I'm dropping on you. Isn't it great to be 'in the know' now?"

It seems it's only those who have no roots of their own that want to bring everyone with them by trying to turn back the clock on what the Church has already baptized and accepted into herself. What a sad world these people must live in, rejecting the celebration of our Lord's nativity or (God forbid) His glorious resurrection. Why even be Christian in any sense, then? It's truly bizarre and sad.

Also, the coins (if authentic) don’t prove the religious convictions of a person throughout their life and upon their deathbed. I’ll give two examples...

Muslims invaded and occupied Christian countries, after which the Muslims had to use and even to mint Christian coins. This doesn’t mean the Muslims believed in our Lord and King Jesus Christ.

One more example. Here in the UK we just minted a 50p Brexit coin, but we couldn’t use that coin 2000 years from now to try and prove what Boris Johnson’s political views were upon his deathbed.

Coins just don’t provide that sort of insight, am I on a fair track here?

God bless all.

I provided Qumran evidence . You didn't.
Dead Sea Scrolls
You are the one with unfounded opinions.
I provided irrefutable evidence from the EOB which you rejected. Choosing to rely on biased UR writers. Jesus proved to us what "aionios" means.
In 9 verses, Jesus defines “aionios” as “eternal.” Jesus used the word “aionios” 29 times, Jesus never used “aionios” to refer to something which cannot be eternal.
[1]John 6:58

(58) This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.[αἰώνιος/aionios]
In this verse Jesus contrasts “aionios life” with “death.” If “live aionios” is only a finite period, a finite period is not opposite “death.” Thus “aionios” by definition here means “eternal.”
[2]John 10:28

(28) I give them eternal [αἰώνιος/aionios] life, and they shall never [ου μη/ou mé] [αἰών/aion] perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
See note on ou mé at bottom. In this verse Jesus pairs “aionios” and “aion” with “[not] snatch them out of my hand.” If “aion/aionios” means “age(s), a finite period,” that is not the opposite of “[not] snatch them out of my hand’” “Aionios life” by definition here means “eternal life.”
[3]John 3:15

(15) That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal [αιωνιον] life.
[4] John 3:16
(16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting [αιωνιον] life.
[/INDENT]
In the above two verses Jesus pairs “aionion” with “should not perish.” Believers could eventually perish in a finite period, thus by definition “aionion life” here by definition means eternal or everlasting life.
[5]John 5:24
(24) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting [αἰώνιος] life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
In this verse Jesus pairs “aionios” with “shall not come into condemnation” and “passed from death unto life.” “Aionios” does not mean “a finite period,” by definition here it means “eternal,” unless Jesus lets His followers come into condemnation and pass into death.
[6]John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting [αἰώνιος/aionios] life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
In this verse Jesus contrasts aionios life with “shall not see life.” If aionios means an indefinite age that is not opposite “shall not see life” By definition aionios means eternal.
[7]John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting [αἰώνιος/aionios] life.
In this verse Jesus contrasts aionios with “shall never thirst.” If aionios means an indefinite age that is not opposite “shall never thirst.” By definition aionios means eternal.
[8]John 6:27
(27) Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting [αἰώνιος/aionios] life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
In this verse Jesus contrasts “aionios meat” with “meat that perishes.” If aionios means an indefinite age that is not opposite “meat that perishes.” By definition aionios means eternal.
[9]John 8:51
(51) Very truly [αμην αμην/amen amen] I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never [ου μη εις τον αιωνα/ou mé eis ton aiōna] see death."
…..According to noted Greek scholar Marvin Vincent,
● The double negative [ου μη/ou mé] signifies in nowise, by no means. Θεωρήσῃ[theōrésé], denoting steady, protracted vision, is purposely used, because the promise contemplates the entire course of the believer's life in Christ. It is not, shall not die forever, but shall live eternally.
● ④οὐ marker of reinforced negation, in combination w. μή, οὐ μή has the effect of strengthening the negation (Kühner-G. II 221–23; Schwyzer II 317; Mlt. 187–92 [a thorough treatment of NT usage]; B-D-F §365; RLudwig: D. prophet. Wort 31 ’37, 272–79; JLee, NovT 27, ’85, 18–23; B-D-F §365.—Pla., Hdt. et al. [Kühner-G. loc. cit.]; SIG 1042, 16; POxy 119, 5, 14f; 903, 16; PGM 5, 279; 13, 321; LXX; TestAbr A 8 p. 85, 11 [Stone p. 46]; JosAs 20:3; GrBar 1:7; ApcEsdr 2:7; Just., D. 141, 2). οὐ μή is the most decisive way of negativing something in the future.[1]

Arndt, W., Danker, F. W., Bauer, W., & Gingrich, F. W. (2000)
A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian Literature.(3rd Ed). Chicago: University of Chicago Press.
.● The combinations with οὐ μή also be noticed as, ουδεν οὐ μή (Lu. 10:19); οὐ μή se σε άνο ουδ ου σε εγκαταιπο (Heb. 13:5); ουκετι οὐ μή (Rev. 18:14). There is no denying the power of this accumulation of negatives. Cf. the English hymn "I'll
never, no never, no never forsake."

Hahahaha. Funny joke, but at the same time so disconnected from reality that I worry about what a person who believes this might otherwise believe, because it's certainly not Christianity. The western Santa Claus comes ultimately from St. Nicholas of Myra, a 4th century bishop in Asia Minor (modern Turkey), via an amalgamation of various European pre-Christian traditions and a concerted American commercial campaign.

Your user name can be rearranged to form the phrase "A Lobsters Creed" (yes, I checked)...does that mean that you are actually a lobster? What are you doing on the internet, lobster, spreading your false creed around a Christian website? Go home. Go back to the sea.

See how ridiculous that sounds? Because it really does sound ridiculous. So please stop posting this ridiculous nonsense.

Rubbish! An anagram of a name means diddly squat. Santa Claus has never been any part of a Christmas service I have attended or officiated. The church is not responsible for what secular society does around Christmas time. The Roman Sun God had no birthday.
