  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I believe his were real. The acid theory to me just doesn't hold water, because upon death the wounds disappeared and no marks were found...if the wounds were man made, seems like there would be some scarring from years of self infliction.

Plus in the beginning he tried to hide them, a person that fakes these things seeks for the attention. We have so many accounts from others that his piety was sincere.

I read a book about St Padre Pio and yes I totally believe his stigmata was real. Some people say it was faked but there is evidence that goes against those accusations.

In addition..

His stigmata disappeared after his death, and during his life he had the odour of sanctity! He also worked soo many miracles and had many visions etc.. I think he's definitely one of the greatest Saints :)

The acid lie ...

If PADRE Pio used acid, there is no way he could have lived without necrosis of the muscle tissue from dumping acid to the hands repeatedly for 50 years.

The tissue would have died and he would have eventually lost his hands, or his life.
Infection and necrosis are the most serious problems...with that false witness.

The stigmata was real and when he died, they said his body was empty of blood.
Interesting really.

He is one of my favorite Saints.

Definitely real! I have a lovely devotion to him. I ask for his intercessions and spiritual direction all the time. You better be ready when you ask. LOL!
Please share devotion!

It's so heartbreaking to hear of those who constantly malign this Saint......

I really love St Pio.
I would like to hear the devotion and experience.

I know that he works quickly in helping converting folks. Well, at least that is what i saw. Not sure its that way all the time.

If you need someone's heart to convert - he's the Saint.

Peace.

I'm proud to say that one of the biggest defenders of of Padre Pio is a Lutheran pastor, C. Bernard Ruffin. He was interviewed by Father Groeschel on EWTN one time so I bought his book on St. Pio. He goes through Pio's life in detail, including evidence in support of stigmata. You can read a bunch of his book online here:

Padre Pio: the true story - Google Books

Or buy it here:

Amazon.com: Padre Pio: The True Story (9780879736736): Bernard C. Ruffin: Books
Neat.

There was a movie i wanted so so so badly, and i had to save to get it, but when i finally had the expendable income, it was sold out.

I just want to mention that the Church would not of canonized Him a Saint if his stigmata was a farce. Doctors estimated that for 50 years he lost a cup of blood every day. His five wounds were deep, bleeding and painful, but completely free of inflammation and swelling.

He was canonized a Saint by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002. Today his tomb is the most visited shrine in Europe, surpassing even Fatima and Lourdes, a place of extraordinary holiness for those in search of inspiration.

I happen to have a third class relic of Padre Pio. Even though it is third class, it is priceless to me, and I carry it in my purse, and use the devotion in it whenever I go to adoration or in other times I need his intercessions. Years ago I asked him to Spiritually direct me like he would a daughter. I never know how powerful of a request that was. i was so naive (well ok still am). He never lets me get away with anything. LOL. What a great intercessor he is always spiritually directing those that ask him right to the Lord. I will be the first to admit, he gets right to the point, and the sandpaper really is rough, and can be painful on the journey. But when you look back, it is a joyful pain, and you almost forgot how painful it was. :)

Prayer for the Intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina
Dear God, You generously blessed Your servant,
St. Pio of Pietrelcina, with the gifts of the Spirit.
You marked his body with the five wounds
of Christ Crucified, as a powerful witness
to the saving Passion and Death of Your Son.
Endowed with the gift of discernment,
St. Pio labored endlessly in the confessional
for the salvation of souls.
With reverence and intense devotion
in the celebration of Mass,
he invited countless men and women
to a greater union with Jesus Christ
in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Through the intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina,
I confidently beseech You to grant me
the grace of (here state your petition). Amen.

Glory be to the Father... (three times).

Stay with me, Lord
Prayer of St. Pio of Pietrelcina after Holy Communion
Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have
You present so that I do not forget You.
You know how easily I abandon You.

Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak
and I need Your strength,
that I may not fall so often.

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life,
and without You, I am without fervor.

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light,
and without You, I am in darkness.

Stay with me, Lord, to show me Your will.

Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice
and follow You.

Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You
very much, and always be in Your company.

Stay with me, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You.

Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is,
I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of love.

Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late and the day is coming to a close, and life passes;
death, judgment, eternity approaches. It is necessary to renew my strength,
so that I will not stop along the way and for that, I need You.
It is getting late and death approaches,
I fear the darkness, the temptations, the dryness, the cross, the sorrows.
O how I need You, my Jesus, in this night of exile!

Stay with me tonight, Jesus, in life with all it’s dangers. I need You.

Let me recognize You as Your disciples did at the breaking of the bread,
so that the Eucharistic Communion be the Light which disperses the darkness,
the force which sustains me, the unique joy of my heart.

Stay with me, Lord, because at the hour of my death, I want to remain united to You,
if not by communion, at least by grace and love.

Stay with me, Jesus, I do not ask for divine consolation, because I do not merit it,
but the gift of Your Presence, oh yes, I ask this of You!

Stay with me, Lord, for it is You alone I look for, Your Love, Your Grace, Your Will, Your Heart,
Your Spirit, because I love You and ask no other reward but to love You more and more.

With a firm love, I will love You with all my heart while on earth
and continue to love You perfectly during all eternity. Amen

Efficacious Novena To The Sacred Heart Of Jesus
(This novena prayer was recited every day by Padre Pio for all those who asked his prayers)
O my Jesus, You have said, ‘Truly I say to you, ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.’ Behold, I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of...

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be to the Father... Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

II. O my Jesus, You have said, ‘Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, He will give it to you.’ Behold, in Your name, I ask the Father for the grace of...

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be to the Father... Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

III. O my Jesus, You have said, ‘Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.’ Encouraged by Your infallible words, I now ask for the grace of...

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be to the Father... Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us poor sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of You, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate heart of Mary, Your tender mother and ours.
Hail, Holy Queen... St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.

Visit to the Most Blessed Sacrament
Padre Pio recited this prayer daily. It was written by St. Alphonsus Liguori.
O my Lord Jesus Christ, who for the love You bear mankind, remain night and day in this Sacrament, all full of tenderness and love, expecting and receiving all those who come to visit You: I believe that You are present in the Sacrament of the altar; I adore You from the depths of my own nothingness and thank You for all the favors You have bestowed upon me; and especially for having given me Yourself in this Sacrament, and Your holy Mother Mary as my Advocate; and for having called me to visit You in this church. I pay homage this day to Your most loving Heart and this I intend to do for three intentions: first, in thanksgiving for this great gift; secondly, in reparation for all the insults You have received from Your enemies in this Sacrament; thirdly, by this visit I intend to adore You in all places upon the earth, where You are least adored and most neglected in Your Sacrament.

My Jesus, I love You with my whole heart. I repent of having in the past so many times displeased Your infinite goodness. I intend, with the help of Your grace never more to offend You in the future; and at the present, wretched as I am, I consecrate myself wholly to You. I give You, and utterly renounce, my entire will, all my affections, all my desires, and all that I possess. From this day forth, do with me and with all that is mine whatever is pleasing in Your sight. I ask and desire only Your holy love, final perseverance and the perfect fulfillment of Your will.

I commend to You the souls in purgatory, especially those who were most devoted to this Blessed Sacrament and to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I commend to You in like manner all poor sinners. Finally, my dear Savior, I unite all my affections with those of Your most loving Heart, and thus united I offer them to Your eternal Father, and I pray to Him in Your name graciously to accept and answer them for love of You.

A Prayer for Trust and Confidence in God's Mercy
by St. Pio of Pietrelcina
O Lord,
we ask for a boundless confidence
and trust in Your divine mercy,
and the courage to accept
the crosses and sufferings
which bring immense goodness
to our souls and that of Your Church.
Help us to love You
with a pure and contrite heart,
and to humble ourselves beneath Your cross,
as we climb the mountain of holiness,
carrying our cross that leads to heavenly glory.
May we receive You
with great faith and love in Holy Communion,
and allow You to act in us as You desire
for your greater glory.
O Jesus, most adorable Heart
and eternal fountain of Divine Love,
may our prayer find favor before
the Divine Majesty of Your heavenly Father.

I found this...
The Shrine of Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, southern Italy, is the second-most visited Catholic shrine in the world. It centers on the tomb of Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, a Capuchin friar, priest and mystic known for his devotion to God, care for the sick, and supernatural gifts. He died in 1968 and was declared a saint in 2002.

San Giovanni Rotondo is 180 miles east of Rome on the Gargano Promontory in southern Italy's Puglia region.

The train from Rome to Foggia takes about 3 hours on a Eurostar train or 4 1/2 to 5 on the less expensive IC trains (with no connections required). As of this writing, there are 7 trains a day (weekdays) between 8AM and almost midnight. There are frequent connecting buses from Foggia train station to San Giovanni Rotondo that take about 40 minutes.
