The Oscars just announced that they're going to introduce new "diversity" requirements in 2024, such that any film which wants to be a "Best Picture" nominee must have a minimum amount of women / racial minorities / LGBT individuals either in the cast or in the production staff.

This is going to invalidate entire genres of films, up to and including many films who are past Best Picture winners and nominees.

I think it's just going to create two categories in discussions...

1. Who won the Best Picture Oscar.
2. Who really made the best picture that year.

I think film makers especially independent ones won't care less about the Oscars anymore. I mean in times past people who would say they didn't care about the Oscars really did,but I think now most won't.

There were expectations and demands in different eras I'm sure. In the time of the 50 & 60s a female had to be able to scream well.....now they have the men screaming, or the woman is in charge or if not in charge she at least has to be able to beat up 5 guys, Kung Fu Karate style. I've never minded some movies where you see this taking place but when it becomes an iron clad rule you eventually turn people off. People tire of being subjected to social engineering where ever they turn their heads.

I think this is a good thing. Movies like Saving Private Ryan would have been much better if they casted some black actors who could whine about the evils of the white man.

I'm not in favour of this move, I also have no interest in these types of backslapping award ceremonies but I can't see how this move is corrupt.

Calm yourself, it's just a movie award. The ones giving out the award have the right to set standards.

The real value of art is how much money it makes in the box office, not how many gold statues it wins in an award show.

So the question for me is - in America, are you allowed to request someone to identify their ethnicity, whether they're gay, etc in an employment setting? Because I'm pretty sure it's illegal in many countries.

So you're making a movie, and you want to see whether you meet the criteria, so you have to break the law by asking your employees these kinds of questions to get an Oscar?

I mean, I'm glad we're moving away from movies full of white people where it doesn't make sense, but this reaction seems kind of - dumb.
