  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Oscars: We're going to make ourselves even more irrelevant!

Yeah, because up till now that never happened with the politics free, insider trading free Oscar system.

Uh huh...the morons in charge of this would've told Picasso he used too much blue in his blue period.

Most previous Oscar winners are likely to pass the diversity rules stipulated by the new rules. Even Driving Miss Daisy:eek:.

Really? Didn't Parasite win Best Picture last year? Doesn't it have an all Korean cast?

Oscars Shake Up Best Picture Eligibility With Strict New Diversity Rules In 2024 – Deadline

The Oscars just announced that they're going to introduce new "diversity" requirements in 2024, such that any film which wants to be a "Best Picture" nominee must have a minimum amount of women / racial minorities / LGBT individuals either in the cast or in the production staff.

This is going to invalidate entire genres of films, up to and including many films who are past Best Picture winners and nominees.

Way to go, Hollywood.

The casting and storyline requirements don't look too onerous or even outside what's common in a lot of films already - they only have to hit one of those criteria from group A; they don't have to hit all of them. Even the department head rules don't look like that big a deal - Sound/Music and VFX might be bro-fests, but how hard is it to find a hairstylist, makeup artist, costume designer, or set decorator who's a woman or a gay guy? It's basically a stereotype.

It's below those roles where things get interesting - these rules strike me as having more impact the less visible the role, which I didn't expect at all. Requiring diversity among the crew and marketing departments would (I suspect) do little to reshape the films being made right now or in the next 5 years, but potentially do quite a bit to shape the entire industry 10+ years out.

Really? Didn't Parasite win Best Picture last year? Doesn't it have an all Korean cast?

That would pass Standard A on the very first criteria listed:

STANDARD A: ON-SCREEN REPRESENTATION, THEMES AND NARRATIVES
To achieve Standard A, the film must meet ONE of the following criteria:

A1. Lead or significant supporting actors

At least one of the lead actors or significant supporting actors is from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group.
  • Asian

I remember seeing signs like these in various history texts and lessons and thinking "how could people be so stupid"?

FACT CHECK: Did 'No Whites Allowed' Signs Exist in the Segregated South?

Racial discrimination is wrong....period. No one should be denied a job because of their race and no one deserves a job because of their race.

That's all this is, the new racism...the new racial discrimination. Now it comes from liberal Hollywood and it's aimed at whites and the racists all approve.

Diversity = less white guys. Gotcha.

The racists want your jobs.

Yes, it's totally racist to tell the industry to start letting other people into their existing white boys club.

What's the difference between your opinion here and that of a Jim Crow business owner who believes in racial discrimination in hiring?

The Jim Crow owners were trying to exclude a group of people. This current policy is intended to increase inclusion of a greater variety of people.

The hilarious thing is that some people here clearly think there's a difference between

"We don't want to hire whites"

And

"We want to hire people of color"

As if the first is racist but the second isn't. I guess we could just reimagine Jim Crow as that period when businesses were trying to be more inclusive on hiring more non-POC.
