  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Odd prayer request . . .

My wife is suddenly talking very seriously about moving out of the area. This would be devastating to me as I have a wonderful parish, a great priest, and so many good things in my church.

While I will submit to God's will for me (or at least try to) in all things, your prayers that her desires do not come to pass will be appreciated. I really would like to remain in this parish if possible.

But . . . who knows? The Lord took me on a very strange journey round the mulberry bush to get to Orthodoxy, so . . .

Have you talked to her? Is it not her priest, parish and church also?

No. She is Roman Catholic. And there are "issues" in the marriage that I would rather not go into.

Lord have mercy! may I ask why the desire to move?

Elizabeth had quite a bit of money from her divorce. She has been, in my opinion, unwise with it. We live in a house that is far too big for two people and is in one of the most expensive counties in the United States - Fairfax County VA. With these factors, she is looking to move to a smaller place which is less expensive. The problem is that such a place does not exist in Fairfax County. Things are ridiculously expensive here and the country taxes everything but the air you breathe (and I think they are working on doing that).

So, she is looking to move to a place out in the country, which would be okay with me IF . . . we could move up to the next county over. It would mean a longer drive to church, but I would do that.

gotcha, Lord have mercy.

Most of all, pray that God's will be accomplished and that I be open to it, despite any feelings I may have about where things are going. So many times, our Lord is going to have an even greater blessing waiting if we just follow Him into a place we think at first that we may not like.

I can empathize to an extent. About five years ago we moved, requiring us to leave our church home (I am a Baptist). It was a difficult decision, but after much prayer my wife and I decided this was where God was leading us.

The first two years was a time of missing our church family. We did not settle right in as far as churches go. But we did find a home in our current church. It is not the same, of course, and in many ways we both miss our old congregation. At the same time we recognize that this is where God has put us and the blessings overshadow a sense of loss at what we left behind. God has blessed us through our current church in ways I do not believe possible at our previous one.

I pray that God’s will be accomplished in you and your wife’s lives, and that both of you will be patiently content during the process.

If you do end up moving, let us know where to. We may have parish recommendations depending on the general area.

I know that having to find a new parish home can be scary, but it is not quite the end of the world. St Mary's in Falls Church is a good parish (I'll drop by for vespers sometimes), but there are others out there like it.
