It is the first time i have gone through the whole Bible. We are on day 305.

Blimey, so much war, murder etc in the old testament!!! Killing, killing, killing. Slaughter after slaughter!!!

To be honest, it sickens me.

That is history. And it gives insight into how wars were fought in those days.

OT and NT as if 2 different Gods! I know this has been talked about before but the amount of killing in the OT is unbelievable.

Seems like every step of the way there is constant killing.

Does it sicken you because of the necessity for God to deal with sinful man?

No, it just sickens me with the constant bloodshed.

Why doesnt God deal with terrible people we have living today? Drug gangs, pedos, rapists, murderers etc etc etc...

The world is an awful place for many...

Its about time Our Lord came back! We need Him...

Why do you think that these people today are worse than those whom He destroyed in the flood, or Canaanites who were wiped out?

I’m just trying to figure out exactly where you are coming from.

That's the conclusion Marcion came to!

I don't think the OT God is a different God (and I know you don't either), but I do think the Bronze Age people who wrote about God in the OT were very different people than those the Iron Age people who wrote about God in the NT. They were so different, in fact, that God had established a different--and better--covenant with them.

The OT writers had genuine experiences with God, but wrote down those experiences while wearing Bronze Age goggles. "We went in and killed everything that breathed. It worked, we won, so that must have been God's will. Write that down."

If reading about what happened in the OT sickens you, take a look around. You will see that the same thing is happening today. Yet we are living in the age of God's grace, where every sin can be repented of. In the OT God worked through Israel to make His will known.War and desolations will continue until Lord Jesus returns. Just ask in prayer for strength to endure the trials that are going to come.

Lord Jesus will return at the appointed time (maybe today). But, imho things will get bloodier than anything shown in the OT. Jesus said
Matt. 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

So these things must happen and they point towards His return.

It sickens God also.

Ecclesiastes 1:10
Is there a case where one can say, "Look, this is new"? It has already existed in the ages before us.

Because God gave us free will.

Good posts people, many thanks.

I understand why but it just seems that in OT times there was a tremendous amount of bloodshed compared to the NT which is vastly different in many ways. And i understand its telling a different story anyway.

Listening to the Bible in a year has opened up to me just how much warefare the Israelites went through.

It just seems like, to me, that the OT is mostly about war and conquering other nations...

The Tanakh/God and New Testament/God and war and peace pitted against each other.

Well the world has not seen nothing yet, a person thinks the times in The Tanakh were violent. Just wait till the tribulation and the return of The Messiah, talk about death and blood shed.

And did you pay attention to what was going on?

God used His chosen nation to execute His judgement on evil, vile, demonic cities that were in the land God gave Israel.

The OT wars are a display of God's annihilation of the evil, arrogant and Godless nations before Him and establishing a God fearing nation for Himself...one of His own making...He chose Israel, they did not choose Him nor were they more deserving of His attention...they were as Scripture says, a stubborn and stiff-necked people too. God gave them the Law and provided for them richly while they obeyed.
The wars are both historically accurate and they are symbolic for the NT Christians to read and learn from for they symbolize spiritual warfare for us. Israel's enemies are a Godless people and as long as Israel sought God's counsel and followed His commands they overcame their enemies and flourished in the Promised Land. They were to have no fear of their foes for they were to have faith that God was with them and that it was really God fighting their battles for them. We, as NT believers can take these as examples for how to live our lives in faith carrying out God's NT instructions fearlessly.
II Corinthians 10:3-5
3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

I've got some goods news and some bad news for you.

First, the good news. The historical books in the OT were written over about a thousand year period and focused mostly on wars, just as most secular history books are about wars also, btw. There was a whole lot more slaughter and bloodshed in just the 20th century alone than in all the OT which may seem constant since that is what is written about the most. However, if you recognize many decades between wars in the OT it might not seem as bad. Since 9/11 there have been more than 40,000 Islamic terrorist attacks that resulted in at least one person being killed. Does the world even notice?

Now the bad news. The slaughter and bloodshed written by the prophets in the OT, including passing newborn babies through the fire, is still to come.

This should sicken you, and anyone that loves peace.
