  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

. . . someone tries to take away our firearms, they'll be pryin' my Colt .45 out of my cold, dead hands.

What Spiritual Gift is that?

But, then again is that a name for a spiritual pistol filled with anointed 45 slugs?

Tut-tut Pinetree you are now expressing the aggression of man, the spirit of violence, which isn't becoming of a believer of our Lord Jesus Christ. But, then again I suppose really all the statistics given in thread one isn't that bad after all, because I notice the those same increases is happening in America, and it appears that Americans have more arms than what is being used in Iraq and Afgahanistan.:)

Yes , you obviously know about it too.

Well being an ex-Army and witnessed a lot of it on direct broadcast from the scene when it happened, the person concerned needed to be a trained rifleman/gunman to do so much carnage in such a short time, particularly in the cafe.

So--do we disagree with these findings?

What can we attribute them to?

That the world is getting more violent and that Australia isn't exempt from such violence. Find it interesting also that America with all their guns as protection is having the same increase...what can we attribute to that?

Also....13 YEARS Frank....13 years since our last mass shooting, which is what the law was brought out for.....can your country say the same????

Yes. Those places with the greatest increases in crime tend to have the most restrictive gun laws.

By this time tomorrow that sentence could change completely, and there's nothing gun laws can do about that.

... but we've been down this road before... :lost:

Really?

By this time tomorrow that sentence could change completely, and there's nothing gun laws can do about that.

But even if it did...13 years have gone by when we had had about 12 shootings in 10 years previous to that....so going from 12 to ZERO does say a lot about the gun laws.

The day that Martin Bryant opened fire in that cafe was the day that we all stared in horror at how much we were turning into america. It was a very sad day...I remember it well!

There has not been a repeat in 13 years...again...can your country say the same? How about I answer for you....NO!!!! When was your last mass shooting again?...I'm losing count! Some highschool wasn't it??

Really? So are you one of those who think that man really didn't walk on the moon too?? :p

Cass it appears to me that you don't really know what we are talking about. We are talking about the massacre at Port Arthur in the mid 1990s.:)

So am I...I thought it sounded like you thought it was some conspiracy in order to bring in gun laws...something sinister....the way you said "the person concerned needed to be a trained rifleman/gunman to do so much carnage in such a short time, particularly in the cafe." Made it sound like you didn't believe that it was possible for him to do so much damage unless he was a trained gunman.

Not true.

The places with the greatest increases in crimes tend to have the easiest access to guns.

More guns, means more power, and more power corrupts more....

There is a lot of evidence to say it was just that.

From the local police who were on duty but were not called, and were told to keep quiet about it or else.
The guy in the footage when the shooter runs out the door of the cafe is having a casual smoke.
How the anti gun laws were passed so quick.
Evidence from the burned gun.

Are you serious??

Well as I said...I guess man really didn't walk on the moon...oh and Sept. 11 was to incite an excuse for war...Elvis Presely really is alive...etc...

Come on...who actually believes in all these conspiracy theories!!!

Port Arthur conspiracy theory still upsets Tasmanians

PRINT FRIENDLYEMAIL STORYThe World Today Archive - Thursday, 22 February , 2001 00:00:00

Reporter: Maura Angle

COMPERE: In Tasmania, and I guess in a lot of other parts of Australia, people are outraged that a connection is still being made between the jailed Martin Bryant and the so called conspiracy for the mass murders that committed.

As Maura Angle tells us in Launceston, it's reignited a debate which those affected want left well alone.

MAURA ANGLE: The conspiracy theories surrounding the Port Arthur tragedy have been around since the mass shooting shocked the world almost 5 years ago. They've resurfaced, and according to Ed Gouden from the Tasman Council, so have the feelings of despair for those affected by Martin Bryant.

ED GOUDEN: We just don't need this kind of rubbish to be brought up, and unsubstantiated claims to come out just for political gain. It's not appropriate, it's innacruate, and it should be nipped in the bud and not given any credibility at all.

MAURA ANGLE: Mr Gouden's not alone. The theories have been discounted by the Tasmanian Government, police and the man who prosecuted the case, Damian Bugg QC.

Martin Bryant's former lawyer, John Avery, is outraged as well.

JOHN AVERY: I think it brings it all up again, unfortunately, and resurrects all the trauma again. And I think it would devastate any person closely affected with the massacre, and I think accordingly it's an absolute shame for Tamsania and those who suffered.

MAURA ANGLE: Mr Avery says anyone who thinks Bryant wasn't acting alone, or that the massacre was part of a grand plan to disarm Australia, is just plain mad.

JOHN AVERY: I picked up the case from anotehr lawyer and it took no more than a few minutes of viewing the material that there was to indicate. So I think anyone who baulks at that suggestion is either silly or stupid or mad.

MAURA ANGLE: The Tasmanian branch of the One Nation Party is distancing itself from the theories. President, Peter Stokes.

PETER STOKES: We don't hold it, One Nation's position is we don't hold with that theory at all. And we certainly will distance ourselves from that statement.

MAURA ANGLE: But Mr Stokes continues to fuel the fire. He says there are too many questions unanswered, and he wants a Royal Commission into Port Arthur.

PETER STOKES: There are lots of things that need to come out in that, and I would see it firstly, it would be to ascertain how this incident could have actually happened in the first place. And I would imagine the second part of a Royal inquiry would certainly be to recommend actions to stop such an incident from ever happening again.

MAURA ANGLE: That's what the new gun laws are for, and since the Port Arthur tragedy there hasn't been a mass shooting in Australia. It's been almost five years since 35 people were shot dead and dozens more injured.

Those affected live with the memories every day. Ed Gouden from the Tasman Council says he's been speaking to some of the survivors.

ED GOUDEN: Some people saw their loved ones shot by this individual, and to say that it wasn't the case is inaccurate, it's wrong and the people . whetehr Pauline Hanson has said it, or not, or whether her organisation is pushing it, should be put in their place very, very quickly. And, yep, told where to get off, to be nice about it.

COMPERE: Ed Gouden of the Tasman Council, with our reporter in Tasmania Maura Angle.
