Wait a minute. So Jonah's soul went to hell but his body is what was in the fish?

Look the text says: Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

That really makes no sense given the fact that the text says Jonah prayed to God out of the fish's belly and not out of hell.

Man can kill the body but not the soul.
1 Corinthians 15 is about raising bodies.
Man cannot kill the soul because man cannot kill the spirit which only God can give and take away.

Also, i don't think that Jonah waited days to pray. I just think that the answer to his prayer did not come immediately. He prayed but it was until 3 days that God let him out.

The Bible doesn't seem very interested in subjective experiences of death. But you can find those in Christian literature outside the Bible, going back for centuries, and even in pagan authors such as Plato.

That's because in Judaism, hope for another world is not really part of the picture. There is some hope of resurrection (especially in the intertestamental and talmudic literature), but everything about it is uncertain. The focus is on life. The religion becomes a kind of ethnic obligation to carry on.

Well saying his thoughts perish is different from saying he knows nothing. In Eccl 9;5 he says:
Ecc 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

I think the text you're referring to was said by David:
Psa 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

Interesting you brought that up. In Greek Philosophy they believed that the soul was immortal and left at death. This was as far back as 500BC and even further back. My observation is that around this same time, based on the evidence from those who spoke in the bible, they did not share the same view as Socrates and Plato. Martha didn't believe she would go to meet Lazarus when she died in another form of existence, but this was closer to what guys like plato believed.

The still living people forget about the dead after they are gone.
But the first part of the text is what I am looking at where it says the dead know not anything.

By the time of Jesus, some pharisees did believe in a paradise of sorts that the spirits of the righteous dead go to. This idea was borrowed from Persian religion, as the word paradise comes from the Persian word for garden. It seems Jesus affirmed it as well.

2 Corinthians 5:6-8 KJV Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7. (For we walk by faith, not by sight 8. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Our body is like a tent that we temporarily use in this short life, so make a distinction between body, soul, and spirit. A Christian is absent from the body and present with the Lord when he or she physically dies. Our bodies will be raised again at the Rapture, and God will give us glorified bodies.

1 Corinthians 15:50-58 KJV 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Just because Jews did not talk about the fate of the dead a lot doesn't mean they believed in so-called "soul-sleep" or annihilationism. Judaism is a world-affirming religion, moreso than Christianity, so the emphasis is different.

If in 2 Cor 5 Paul is saying that once you die you go to heaven then someone like David should have been with the Lord right?

This is interesting. If this is true doesn't this bother you? I mean the idea that this idea came from Persian religion?

Not really. In the religious tradition I am part of, this is not a secret thing. Jews interacted with Persians during the exile, and may have adopted some of the terminology and motifs to explain their situation. God's providence is big enough in my mind to deal with human beings as they are.

One thing that I just thought of reading your comment: when they say they see Jesus, does Jesus look like how he's commonly depicted (a European-acceptable version of him that probably didn't look like how he actually did), or closer to how he likely actually looked?

Well its is understandable for human beings to pick up things based on their situation. Israel knew nothing about making alters of golden calfs, that is a practice they picked up from Egypt. My trouble is that we're supposed to base our beliefs strictly on what the bible says and not on influence from heathen religions.

Well I respect that opinion. But don't think there is evidence to support it though from what is stated in the bible.

Thanx , and I respect your opinion, I started out believing he may have been alive the whole time but the description now sounds more like he was dead then brought back, no problem, we're just discussing ..
