Just rolled through your neck of the woods. Rental car broke down - had to swap it out in Bakersfield, then on to Fresno. Never trust a Malibu.
Catholics [ with the exception of most Eastern Catholics ] have no idea as to what fasting is.
They are required to fast on two days only - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday . They are supposed to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent and nowadays all year round - but , to our eyes fish is meat and they have these Fish Fries on Fridays during Lent [ Actually that's a US practice - never heard of it in the UK ]
Most strange

Thanks for the welcome Anastasia and ArmyMatt!Welcome!!!
We are very glad to have you. I hope we get to see you in other threads now.
Hehe it's kind of a running joke in our parish - our priest came FROM this parish, he and his Presvytera's families are both in the area, and the older ladies often mention how they used to change her diapers. I think maybe it makes an unusual dynamic as far as an American parish, but we are SO blessed to have him. I just hope they don't move him anytime soon!
That's what I was thinking - in Greece I understood it was the norm for the priest to grow up in the village, maybe the son of the previous priest. But if it ever made confession awkward, I guess it was usually easy enough to find another priest (though maybe not some times in recent history). Thanks for the welcome Anastasia and ArmyMatt!
And haha, that story is great! It reminds me of how my ancestors in Greece must have lived, with the Priest probably being from the same/ nearby village!
I guess another Priest was only a Donkey ride away in the next village? ha! Speaking of the Priest's son, you can tell by many Greek surnames if the person is descended from a Priest! Names like "Pappas" and "Pappanikolaou", "Papageorge, etc..." all denote ancestry from a Priest! You probably knew that of course, this being an Orthodox forum...That's what I was thinking - in Greece I understood it was the norm for the priest to grow up in the village, maybe the son of the previous priest. One year the local supermarket in my town in Pennsylvania had a sign advertising "Lenten Special: ribeye steaks $5.99/lb." I laughed at the absurdity of such a sign and then bought some because Orthodox lent wasn't going to start for a few weeks..."Fish for Lent" is a big deal in Australia. Most of the supermarkets use it as a time to really promote the fish section.
